What thermal imager should I get for x-mas?
« on: December 03, 2016, 07:18:16 pm »
Hi guys,

I was wanting to get a thermal imager since last year and now i decided to order one for x-mas....

I would like something that can go above 120°C (flir one limit), possibly up to 250 or 300°C, the new seek pro ff seams promising but whats up with the noise, how bad is it? And is there a windows software to use it on PC like for the old seek thermal?

Or should I go for something more expensive like i3 thermal expert? Whats the prices on that and is there windows software available?

So what should I get to gave the best Money/Value ratio?

I would say you should buy the FLIR One I'm selling on ebay...
With the left over money I would buy
1. A ZnSe lens with around 50 mm focal length for closeup work [20Eur]
2. One or two ZnSe ND filters [around 200Eur, or does anybody know a cheaper source?]
3. The new 1.99 Eur iPhone App that gives the full sensor resolution

So for 440 Eur you get a setup with which you can image almost arbitrarily high temperatures,
like thousands of degrees and very small features. Much 'hotter' than 330C in my opinion...

By the way, and a little off topic, did anybody ever try to unscrew the lepton sensor lens for better close distance focus?
Is there any appreciable space between the shutter and the lens so it would fit back on?

I had the same idea, but the shutter for the FFC is in front of the lens.

But from what I have seen on the web the shutter is just clipped on and can be easily removed. Maybe it would work reasonably without
the shutter and could be calibrated manually if necessary.
If nobody buys my FLIR One within two weeks or so I'll just take it apart and see what happens...

What version number is that?

Edit: nvm, found the relevant info

I'm repelled from Apple products like the devil from holly water!

according to this: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/thermal-imaging/first-timer-thermal-camera/msg1083002/#msg1083002

T.E. Q1 -> 499$
T.E. Q1 Plus -> 599$
T.E. Q1 Pro -> 699$

Shipping 65$-85$.

this cammeras look just great and not much more expensive than seek

I think the TE – Q1 Pro would be best for me

Whatever fits yourself!
I'm repelled by Windows, wrestling with linux for days to get otherwise simple stuff done and above all by 85$ shipping costs!  :o

I bought a FLIR TG165 this year and did wonders in my lab. Several times I was able to use it to identify various defects on the PCBs I designed by ... seeing components that were heating up a little too much. Can't express enough how much time it saved me. Check it out.
