Clearance Siglent SDS1104x-e: worth it?
« on: October 13, 2020, 06:19:06 pm »
Hi all,

I've been planning on buying a Siglent SDS1104x-e for a while now. I recently saw that Siglent has one in their clearance store for $50 off, new with a 3 year warranty, however, it has an expired calibration certificate. From what I can tell the unit is not specifically out of calibration, they just can't certify that it isn't. Would this be worth it?

A little about me: I'm a 2nd year (sophomore) EE student in the US. I already have a Tektronix 2215 that has been serving me well, though I am starting to want the features of a digital scope (decoding, capture, easier measuring, etc.). I can't imagine I will be doing anything super fancy that I would require perfect calibration. Though I do plan on growing into this scope so I don't want this to become a hinderance later on just to save $50. From the reading I have done here this seems to be a scope that will fit my needs quite well, but if there is a scope I have not considered I'm all ears.

Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the forum.

I have a pre-production SDS1104X-E that didn't come with any Cal sheet that I received as part of the beta tester scheme. In all those years since I have no reason to doubt its accuracy.

But hey if you are tempted grab it or as has been posted here, Siglents Amazon shop are doing a 15% special on them too:

I wouldn't worry about the calibration certificate, these devices auto calibrate.

You actually need to recalibrate whenever there's a change of temperature, eg. summer/winter but most people don't even bother doing that. Oscilloscopes are used for looking at the shape of things, not for making very precise voltage measurements.

nb. Those certificates are mostly for companies that need to point to pieces of paper when lawyers appear.

Awesome, happy that it helped someone ! (I am the one who posted the deal)

Tautech, who do I have to get in bed with to get a beta tester oscilloscope/multimeter ?  ::)

Many thanks! Glad I stopped here for advice. Very happy with it! Named it Marty and my old Tek scope Doc (Dave would probably be proud  ;D)
