SDS2104X Plus: Audible tone at 10ns/div and 5ns/div
« on: July 09, 2021, 09:11:38 am »

Hello,

i just bought a SDS2104X Plus and noticed something i never had on any other scope. If i set the timebase to 10ns/div or 5ns/div there is a audible tone with a high frequency. Sounds somewhat similar to coil whine on some power supplies. The tone is gone when the trigger is switched from "run" to "stop". So its related to timebase and trigger.

I asked the dealer if this is normal or just my device. He checked and confirmed that it is the same on a device he has in his stock. He contacted Siglent and is waiting for their feedback.

So i was wondering if others noticed that as well on their scopes? To check you can just set the timebase to 10ns/div and the trigger to auto. It is also there at 5ns/div but with a higher frequency tone.

Thanks for your feedback.

Same on mine.
Mine needs the right input signal to cause the noise though. I found the sound is very signal dependent. Different signals change the pitch, make it get louder, quieter.
Does yours do it with no input signal? Any impact of enabling other channels?
Mine seems to happen when I'm looking at high frequencies. Could be because that's when the finer time-base settings are used, like you mentioned.
I haven't dug any deeper to investigate why.

Stuff like this isn't uncommon.  The sweep frequency is causing a magnetostrictive or static vibration at the sweep rate.  The usual fix is to find what's vibrating and clamp it more securely.
