E3610A + Reversed Battery is a Bad Idea ! Help please :(
« on: March 16, 2013, 07:16:03 pm »
hey

I was Charging my 12V 12AH Battery for ummm I think 3 Hours ...
and then I was needed the supply for 12V fan ... so I used the supply of course ... :-//

But! - then when I finished and wanted to Charge my Battery .... I accidently plugged the Crock clips the wrong way ! and Bang !  :scared: :bullshit:

and the very first thing I saw Was the CC led on .

so I immediately  Dial the CC Knob and saw it correspond , Hence I Am 100% sure that the series Diod (MR854)  is fused  :phew:

So I desoldered it out and now my Question :

I have no access to buy that MR854 , but I Do have MUR415 , Does It suitable ?

I am scared  :scared: , can I put Forward Bias Shottky after R35,R36 ? ( or perhaps after R2 ? )

the Schema is on the E3610A manual - page 16

thank you in advance !  :phew:

MUR415 is suitable.  You can also test your power supply without this diode, it's only for protection and your power supply should work normally without it.  Just don't try to charge batteries without it!

Series Schottky diode would be nice in battery charging applications, but if you place it after R35, R36 it will only protect the output stage. You can still blow your MR854 to short-circuit and burn your pcb traces along with it.
You were actually lucky if  only damage was MR854 and your nerves.  ;D 12v 12Ah battery is easily capable of burning every pcb trace and internal wiring between output terminals and the MR854.

Next time when charging batteries I would just place the schottky diode in the power supply output and compensate the voltage drop by adjusting the voltage bit higher.

hello

I know The supply is working fine because I could adjast the CC and the A meter corresponded accordingly ,

I I did replaced the MUR854 with the MUR415 , I do know that putting the Shottky  after R35,36 wil " only" protect the whole circuit besides any thing whoes reversd bias with the diod . but you indeed raised a great point - the traces !  :bullshit:

so I guess I'll build a speccial circuit *just* for that battery charging need

thank you Mzzj  :-/O
