I call myself Bruce since that is the name on my birth certificate.
I don't see an straight answer yet.

The stereotype (I guess "meme" in the modern parlance) is Australian males are called Bruce, and females Sheila. It's probably only commonly used in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
Its not a meme. Its a famous Monty Python sketch. When it came out many Australians did actually refer to women as Sheilas, but I think Python themselves came up with Bruce.

Part of the UK last time I looked.

Australia was never part of the UK, even before 1901 when we were just a colony.

Australia was never part of the UK, even before 1901 when we were just a colony.
Well, of course it wasn't part of the UK. We're not France, configuring an entire colonial dynasty just so we had somewhere to stage the surfing event for our Olympics.
