Cheap $50 Iwatsu ss-5702 oscilloscope is it any good?
« on: May 07, 2022, 08:44:50 am »
Good day,I'm still a newbie when it comes to electronics and just doing it as a hobby and loving it...I saw Dave's video on $50 oscilloscopes and was very glad to hear that I don't need the latest and greatest oscilloscope for what I'm doing. So I went treasure hunting and found a Iwatsu ss-5702 that's working and in excellent condition for 550 ZAR (+/- 35 USD at time of posting).

My questions on it is,Is it a good brand, how reliable and fixable is it and just overall it a good oscilloscope?

Thank you.

I have a 200 MHz SS-5712 which I bought new some 40 years ago.
It was positioned against the TEK 475 but had a brighter trace for
very fast events.

After abt. 15 years a transistor in the horizontal deflection ceased
to work. That was easy to find because the manual contains all
the circuits.

I have an 5702, got it in the early '80s, second hand, it was only a year or two old.
Generally great scope, still on my bench.
Now some of the switches, AC, GND, DC, and the input attenuators start getting intermittent, though I only used the scope lightly during the years.
Exercising the switches helps temporarily.
I guess I need to take it apart and clean the switches.

Good luck, Peter
