micsig TO1000 ethernet problem
« on: December 29, 2017, 11:26:33 am »
When trying to transfer video files from my TO1074 I did notice that the speed is too low. Later I did a bit of research and came to conclusion that it's likely a hardware bug. In short, they used  SoC and ethernet PHY which are incompatible. SoC (S5P4418 according to review by mikeselectricstuff) only supports RGMII interface (see attached piece of specification). Ethernet phy is RTL8101F and it supports MII and RMII. RMII and RGMII are different in may ways. MII and RGMII are similar, but they use different direction of TX Clock signal. In RGMII clock is supplied by MAC versus MII, where clock is supplied by PHY.
My experiments confirm that the clocks are not synchronised: I see packet loss and ethernet crc errors on the PC side.
Ti DP83822i is an example of 10/100 Mbit transceiver which IS compatible with RGMII. It's datasheet also has quick description of  RMII, MII and RGMII interfaces.
