Question, anyone here familiar with CCTV system? My son has brought me 2 HDCCTV DVR's that are only displaying the colour bars and the following message USB Disk Scanning written across the colour bars. One is as described and after a few minutes the monitor screen goes blank, the other stays on. Both have 1TB spinning rust drives.I cannot access the menus or do anything with controls.

These are the security systems for his place of work so needs them working ASAP?

The front panel may be locked out for security reasons. Do you have the remote management software and login credentials? Or are they only available to management at another location?

alt-codes work here:  alt-0128 = €  alt-156 = £  alt-0216 = Ø  alt-225 = ß  alt-230 = µ  alt-234 = Ω  alt-236 = ∞  alt-248 = °

Take out the hard drives, and check the health. HDD'sSpinning rusters are Murphy corporals.
I should have said, I've done that, plugged them into my Windows 10 PC on a hot swap caddy and control panel does see them OK. Tried to format one of them and Windows reports its formatting, but actually it isn't.

The DVR's display the same with or without the drives installed.

No I don't, there is no remote system for these, it is purely for the warehouse. One system did work OK for 3 weeks and then stopped running. He had a new identical system on the shelf, swapped the DVR over, and it worked for 3 days and stopped, with exactly the same results.

It's not PC it's TE, it's  about getting GPIB to work.

It's much more on-topic than CCTV.... or your windmills or your kids.

Count on me to talk to you the same way you just did, next time you go OT...and I don't think I will have to wait for too long.

Well that picture is half acceptable  :-DD

Very nice meters to be fair. Intending on trying to do some automation gubbins with mine. It has a lot more bandwidth than the 34401A on AC volts and has a DC out which can go into the 34401A which has a serial port (and that’s as far as I go down that route)

What do you mean, CCTV, its electronic, and TE is being used to diagnose and hopefully fix it using the TE as well, so its just as much on topic as CD and floppy drives, and much more than windmills or kids, although to be fair, I don't mind any of them as long as we don't get pages and pages of them  ;)

Does anyone know how long the Swedish Post keeps a parcel available for pickup? I've sent something to Mansaxel, but he was not online here since 29.7. and he did not respond to my messages! The parcel was placed at a localpickup station on the 3rd.
 :-//

If the parcel has been delivered to a local agent, it will wait for a maximum of seven days, then it will be returned to you.
So it will be returned on the 10th if he does not collect it.

I'm a little worried about him. Even when he was on holiday, he was checking in every day. I wrote him a PM about the terrible way Swedes drive on motorways after getting stuck in a massive traffic jam on the way home from visiting my daughter. I hope irony hasn't struck and that he was one of the people injured in the pile-up that caused it.

Had a quick look inside, mine has failed on the -15A supply, C323 is now a 3.3kΩ resistor & CR307 is now a 85Ω resistor, C323 is right by the display & power connectors. Must be lucky as I can't see any board damage.  :phew:

Some extra pictures with the shield removed, as I didn't remove them last time I had a peek inside.
It needs a good clean around the rear of the board, case is marked July 1992 on the inside, think I should replace the electrolytics at some point too, don't trust 30 year old caps not to piss themselves from the negative lead.  |O

David

That's a kind of decent failure mode that. I'm impressed. To be honest I'm not sure how the tants usually blow up like that. I spent a good few hours trying to blow up SMD tants a few years back and none of them would do anything other than fall off the board after melting their own solder.

Fingers crossed on a repair.

There will be micro- and nano-scopic inconsistencies in manufacturing. Trying to anticipate the exact nature of these and therefore the exact nature of the failure mode is an exercise in extreme statistics...
