You just described Starsucks (bucks) exactly. I do not understand it's popularity. Perhaps it's because most order those stupid "lattes" which are heavily flavored and sweetened guaranteed to give you diabetes.  :palm:

But Robusta does make the best crema. A local roaster has a blend they call "Scuro Napoli" which is 100% Robusta. Very nice crema, that. Taste is not bad, if the "toast" side of coffee is your thing. And for me, it is so.

My main blend has 10% of a high end Indian Robusta in it but it is roasted separately then aged 3 weeks before it gets added into the main blend components. Bad low grown Robusta is just crap in particular when roasted dark.
Coffee, Food, R/C and electronics nerd in no particular order. Also CNC wannabe, 3D printer and Laser Cutter Junkie and just don't mention my TEA addiction....

From memory he was rather short and skinny. I am 6'6" wide frame. Had he tried anything of the sort that you suggest, he would have lost his life.

To be honest I remember the town as peaceful... probably because I don't drink and am not the outgoing kind of guy, so maybe I just simply was never exposed to night life, bad parts of town, and pub fights... maybe.  After the lectures at uni I would just go home to eat something, then back to uni all evening/night to use their computers at the library, 'cause they had internet access, unlimited, super fast, freely available... they had a few satellite dishes on the roof I remember. Think I could get 1 or 2MB/s, orders of magnitude faster than why I had at home in France, 28800 baud Olitec modem, then later my dad had ISDN installed, and concatenated two ISDN cards to double the speed. So IIRC we had 2x64kbps, 128kps, woohoo ! Still, was not super fast, so that broadband and unlimited/free connection at uni was truly out of this world, I got addicted and spend all my time on it.

Anyway, didn't know Hatfield had a reputation !  :-DD

At week-end room mates would go to Saint-Albans as IIRC all the cool pubs and fun was down there. Me, I would stay in my room or at uni/ library again...

Going out for me was mostly limited to paying a visit to the auto parts store to buy parts to fix my old Renault, and learning car mechanics along the way. Hobby got started this way.

The only notable thing that happened at Hatfield, while I was there... I remember, was a massive railway accident. Can't remember if the train derailed or if it was involved in a frontal collision or something...

Oh hell yes, Hatfield did have a reputation, along with the likes of Stevenage, Harlow, Haverhill and Basildon. These were, in the main, towns that had been selected for growth to house what was known as London overspill, which in reality was the clearing out of the undesirables from certain London boroughs. These were people who were considered to be troublemakers for whatever reasons or were common / poor people dislodged from the more well-to-do elitist, people who were more inclined to be socialists.

As a result, rightly or wrongly, these "overspill" towns quickly became known as trouble spots by the locals and were to be avoided as much as possible, the media certainly made a point of highlighting the negative events. Many of the locals hated these Londoners with a passion. I never really felt particularly comfortable when in those towns I must say, but then I had to move to Haverhill myself for work reasons and was given a house right in the new part of the town, which the London overspill estate and, living and working among these Londoners, I quickly learnt that they weren't at all like they had been "painted" by others but were in the large part normal people who had been dealt a bad hand in life.

I even did some special lighting projects in the same uni you went to, one such project I recall was the extensive library which certainly had some unusual requirements.

Memories.....

Hatfield was a big industrial town that housed British Aerospace. Which shut down in 1993. Everyone in the town worked there so the whole place went into a poverty stricken nightmare for about 20 years. The outcome of this was some particularly nasty bits. You may have just been lucky.

At the time I lived to the East somewhat in Bishop’s Stortford and worked in Harlow. Going further west up the A414 was a big no  :-DD

St Albans is very nice. They also had the best computer shop in the UK for a number of years. Now closed of course.

The Hatfield rain crash was a nasty one for sure. Moving a couple of years on I’d bailed out of the EE sector and moved to a Barnet. There was another major crash on that line at Potters Bar which fucked up my commute into London for weeks. I moved to Leytonstone almost immediately and guess what? Well there was another bloody crash on the central line at Chancery Lane which shut everything for weeks.

Grr. Moved west side after that. Has been ok since then!  :phew:

Wow, thanks for the info ! How come I missed that ?!  :o  Can't remember anyone mentioned this site, ever ! It closed 5 years prior to my arrival, so I guess locals had already moved on and nobody was talking about it any more...
Funny how I lived next to that site without even knowing and 10 years later I would retrain in aviation ! It was destiny ?!  :-//

Well your Uni stands on the old airfield that used to be British Aeropace, hence why the roads on that large industrial and retail estate have aircraft names and of the famous Comet Hotel by the roundabout that has a model of The Comet racing plane on a pole outside. This plane was actually built there in 1934 and some photos of this plane, taken by my son, at Shuttleworth, which is where it is now kept, adorn many of the walls in the Comet Hotel and might even be used on place mats in the dining room.

I've been meaning to clear the bench for the Tek 5400 and its tant excision operation. However, there are several things in the way beyond the insane clutter I tend to make around me.

I will get there. Also, I should dare powering the TF1141 VTVM up again, following its partial recap. That would clear a lot of estate up.

In the other flat a Quick mill pegaso.
The coffee from the quickmill is not as tasty as the one from the Rancilio, however the quick mill is easier to use

My Fluke 85 terminal jacks have finally made it to the Erlanger GSP unit, 7 days after ordering them, I'm hoping that they gather some speed from here on, I'm chomping on the bit to get these fitted and then wrap up the meter. :-+

In 2000 (based on the date of the Hatfield accident), it's more likely that the connectivity was based on fibre -- JANET was well on its way to being a decent network already then.


Well I know squat about IT stuff, especially back then, but somehow I doubt it was fiber ?!

It was not 2000... I arrived there September 1998? obviously building, even though it looked brand new, had to be built before that, then it took time to erect it, and before that, to design it etc... So it's 1998 minus a few years, so maybe 1995 at best.
Also, again, there were at least 4 big dishes on the roof all pointing in the same direction. What the hell  were there for then ? YOu don't need all these big dishes to watch TV !  ;D   ... and there no TV in this building anyway. All you had is hjundreds of computers connected to internet, that was all.
So I add 2 and 2 together !  ;D

The GSP has got fairly quick again, the hp 2590A took only 10 days to get from the seller in the US to here. There will be some teardown pictures when I've edited them, it cleaned up nicely the other day.  8)

Anyone near Berlin interested in rescuing an early hp sampling scope? model 185A, complete with another input plug-in and the extender. Seller also has the AC-16V delay line to go with it and a nice old hp 686A sweep oscillator.

I've yet to see any hp 185A/B scopes appear for sale in the UK yet, there is a good chance that none survive.
I only have the 1100A delay line that can be used with it and there was a complete hp 186A switching time tester plug-in in the UK, but sadly I found out the owner scrapped it, a few years after providing some info on it.  :'(

A Renault 19 was hardly and "old" car in 1998. the oldest was probably 10 years.

You said it : it was 10 years old and back then THAT was old for a car !
So I bought hit e Renault 19 as my first car, well, my dad did buy it as a present so I could move with my stuff to go study at Hatfield.
He gave me a budget of 15.000 Francs and said I had to buy it from a professional used car dealer, not a private seller.
Used cars for so little money were rather scarce. This R19 was the only half decent car I could find locally for that price, and it was a bottom of the barrel one. Phase 1 / Mk1, middle age power train : 1.4L "Cléon" carbureted engine (which did not even have an overhead camshaft...) with points ignition.
FOUR speed gearbox, couldn't believe it ! :-\   Of course no power steering no nothing. Did have power brakes, guess I can't complain. Not that you needed it since the brakes were pretty much useless on that car anyway.. well I guess they matched the engine !  ;D
Looking at Wikipedia, the R19 hit the market in 1988 and the Cleon engine (in carbureted form) was dropped in 1991. My car was so old it was probably an 88 since it still had the orange rear light clusters, when back then the two tone  black/red lights were becoming all the rage I remember ! Every manufacturer was replacing the orange lights with black/red clusters at the back !  :-//

So let's say it was 88. Bought it in summer 1998 so t was spot on 10 year old. Well, as I said, might be only 10 years old but even when I bought it was already an ancient and technically obsolete car, bottom of the barrel (especially mine with a 4 speed G/B !  :o ), and was the cheapest / crappiest car I could get from a used car dealer !

Fast forward 16 months later... X-mas 1999. I drove back to France for vacation. Had only a week before I had to go back to Hatfield. So I took that opportunity to give the car to my local Renault garage so they can look at a few problems I was having with the car. Mostly, fuel consumption was insane, like 12L/100kms which is absurd for a tiny engine in a small light car that does nothing but carry just the driver and no cargo, to get me to uni and back.
garage said sorry your car is toast, it's dangerous to drive I can't let you take the wheel again or else if you crash I will be in trouble. I said OK then, but it's 14H00 and I must pack the car and leave at 18H00 at the latest, to catch my ferry to head back to England, so only a few hours to find a new car !
I had only 10.000 Francs in the bank I remember. The only car had for sale at such a low price was... a R21.   Was an Mk1 GTS, 1.7/ carbureted, electronic ignition. So when I boughi it it was 11 years old, and even the day I bought it was the crappiest/cheapest I could find !

Fast forward 2002. I bought another 21, this tiume a sporty Mk2 TXi model, loved it. Was in gaet nick. Car was a 1991 MY IIRC, or there about.
Sadly had to sell it soon after, in 2004. Car was only 13 years old then. Looked great and was in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition, it was a vry reluctant sale ! Went to a few used car dealers that do "old" cars (not dealerships I mean), and they all told me "I DON'T DO OLD JUNK, get out of here !! ".

WHAT ?!  :o

So ended up sold for only 450 Euros on Ebay, 5 or 6 time sless that what I paid for it just 2 years before !!  :(

So my point is... in those times, 10 years ago was a lonnnng time for a car, probably because progress was being made at a fast pace, so it goldf old fast, just like computers of that era.
However newer cars last longer I find. My mom's 206 still is great shape, still looks as modern as any modern junk. All cars look the same for the past 20 years, all the same crap. Now you can't even tell a Renault from Jaguar or a Mercedes. The just are all the same, all with the same problems, same electronic junk, same cheap parts that don't last, yet cost a fortune, same ugly fat SUV's....  but better corrosion resistance though.

Well that's just my opinion of course.. I am sure others will disagree and say their col German SUV is or hybrid is so much better looking or tehcnicalle better than X or Y.... yeah right, if it helps you sleep at night, go for it ...

For example, I now drive a Renault Safrane, which put an end of 20 years of various R21 models (must have had like 10 of them or something ! Loved them....). R21 ownership had become too troublesome. Lack of parts be it new or used, lack of decent used ones on the market, rust that wold not pass MOT anymore... it was forced out of 21 ownership. So bought the Safrane so I can still drive an old Renault without too much electronic garbage in it, easy to maintain, reliable, bullet proof, cheap and pleasant ownership. Bought a late one, 2000MY, with the Masaxel special in it : The Volvo "modular engine", in in-line 5  configuration, 2.5 20V, N/A. I just love this engine. Nothing beats a straight 5 pot for sound when you rev it  8)  Well OK maybe an old italian V12 from an early Diablo of course, love the old Diablo too.
Anyway. Car is now 21 years old, yet it aged much better than my R19 or any of my 21 did. Just because it's design is newer (hit the market in 1992, Mk2 in 1996 or 1997 can't remember).

Actually other than the early '90's Renaults, my other passion is the Lotus Esprit. Moving to the UK for 3 years definitely fueled the fire as I was able to see them in real life and get some rides with coal owners met on the Yahoo group/ mailing list back then. 20 years later still very much in love with them. modern cars ha ve not put a dent in my love for them, just the other wayt around. The crappiest anbd ugliest the modern cars become, the more and more I appreciate the older early '90's cars !

They aren't that many Black 21 Turbos. They do tend (here anyway) to command a premium. My buddy with his Turbo in restoration has a red one, but he wants to paint it black when the time comes to repaint the car.He has already painted the inside of the shell black when the car was stripped. Now he has put all the interior and mechanics in place, just needs to go to the bodyshop to prep and repaint the exterior of the car... but that's precisely the bit that costs an arm and a leg, so he's been postponing it for years now !

You'd be right at home on one of my other favourite forums, Autoshite.com where they like to worship old French rust-buckets amongst other things.

Use to have a 21 GTS myself, it liked to eat distributor caps and rotor arms, comfy though. I've even seen a Quadra Turbo, near to where I live.

There's an annual classic car show here as well which is a bloody nuisance traffic-wise, though of course covid has put paid to it last year and this.

They had a show playing on the Motor Trend channel last year I thought was interesting, because of the conversion to batteries and because it had Euro cars I don't see over here. Some Brit guys were doing the conversions. Hope they have it on again.

OH NO !! Poor old cars ruined with electric BS , that's a tragedy ! Can't they leave them alone retiring peacefully ?!  :scared:

There are enough modern cars crap and ugly and dull that you can practice on if so you want, why destroy poor old cars !  :scared:

They should go to jail. Thankfully they only do a handful of cars so in the grand scheme of things they don't endanger the old car population to any sizeable extent, but still, that's mutilation, I thought law sent you to jail for eternity for mutilating people ! Should be the same for cars !  :-//

But, it that show let you see "exotic" (to you) cars, I guess at least it had some good to it...
