Regarding those battery-related fears, I will always recall the large LiIon-cell (soda-can size) which was penetrated with a nail and, after a time, did even supply some current again.
Typically for the time, it was done by a guy with a hammer, although he wore safety goggles, gloves and a welder's leather apron.
The results were published in a NASA battery workshop paper somewhere in the 80s or 90s. Please don't make me find it, as this is a yearly recurring thing which has produced a lot of large documents.
