I suppose it also is the reason this little device exists:

I cherish mine. It's such a convenient mains applicator. Do note that it does not care which is which and breaks both conductors.

Ah, the old Safebloc. Before moulded on mains plugs or removable IEC mains leads became the norm, everything came from the factory with a fixed mains cable, but with no plug, just bare ends. In those days, every bench had a Safebloc to test things before you put a plug on them. They're still useful, but not as useful as they were back in those days.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

I've done it. The Ultimate TEA Achievement. I went where no man is supposed to go to (and return from). I've done what Many Say could not be achieved.

....

I participated at a TEAuction (you know which one) and bought something that will not only not result in an epic eyeroll from SWMBO but will actually result in approval, nay, admiration.

I have peaked. There's no way but down now....

This reminds me... for those who care, I've gone back and fixed my Repair Blog on the 54645A since the eevBlog roaming singularity completely gutted the photo archives associated with it.

Possibly the worst part is that the plastics don't seem to be yellowed. It looks to have been a fairly nice specimen before it got maimed.

410B Update:

I've disconnected the input wiring loom and opened it up. The triaxial (Three-Axle!  :palm:) cable looks OK, but the other ones are in a very bad way. The common and Ohms leads were very brittle and the DC lead, which is screened, lacks its 22MΩ resistor and was pretty sad as a cable overall.

So far, the recipe is
  • Replace Common lead with modern lab cable, terminated in safety banana, and add a croc clip to suit.
  • Replace Ohms lead with modern lab cable, also terminated in safety banana, but here we add a new straight probe.
  • Replace DC lead with screened 1-core cable, replace missing 22MΩ resistor, and re-fit original probe, restored with parts from the old Ohms probe. (The manual recommends using grammophone stylii as probe tips. I might have a small stash of those somewhere.)
  • Replace mains lead with new PVC or rubber cable (The jury is still out on which)
  • Replace C10 which is the main filter capacitor in the power supply and one of quite few electrolytics.
  • When I'm that far, I'll try bringing it up on the Variac and take it from there.

I've so far started removing the old Common, DC and Ohms leads, and had a go at replacing the DC lead. I'm using Sommer Cable screened 1-core. If that does not hold up, I'll swap it for RG58 or similar. As you can see from the pics I'm getting quite fond of wire ferrules..

New lab cable, bananas, 22MΩ resistors and capacitor are on their way from Mouser.

Cyber Monday score from B&H Photo: Loaded Lenovo Smart Tab10 $153 Delivered to Canada.

$135 to US customers; $153 with duty & sales tax. Still a pretty damn good deal IMO; these are well regarded as having a very vanilla build of android 9/10. :-+

This one is loaded with everything except Cellular plus it has the dock; it is a current model with better specs than the daughter's iPud I'm trying to fix right now. Gonna send that $60 cheapie I got last month back; the crappy WiFi on it was bugging the hell outta me anyways.  :palm:

Interesting... I think I see contacts for both XD card and SIM in the slot.  :wtf:

Guys, I have a question for you, I have a HP laptop that uses a special DC Barrel plug which 3 contacts. It came when I obtained it with 2 power supplies, 1 original and another replacement unit, photos of the  plug connections attached. Now although the replacement unit only shows 2 connections, there are 3 in reality as I have tracked it through by meter and both will power the laptop.

Now, all the DC barrel plugs I have come across are 2 pole only, so does anyone know what the name is for these special plugs at all? They are 7.4 * 5.0mm plugs but the ones shown on the sheet are only 2 pole despite being shown as for HP and Dell laptops. There are from a set designed to plug onto a 5.5 * 2.1mm plugged universal power supply.

I have a Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner which just happens to use the same 3 contact DC barrel plugs and I would like to purchase some of these plugs but cannot find them anywhere?

This is the promise of home 3DP fulfilled; a few minutes (45 including slicing) designing, set the machine to work and go on aboot your business. Come back in a few hours and you have a complete, ready to use part waiting to be popped off the bed and put to use.

And now a digital picture frame that was destined to be eWaste becomes an extra Xmas prezzie for mom-in-law; one we know she'll love as it comes loaded with pics of us she hasn't seen. :-+

There is a 515A in the US...

And a 515A here in Germany ...

And there was a rather nice 545A where I was outsniped.  >:(

Have been extremely unlucky in the past weeks: First, there were several nice items I simply forgot to bid in time. All of them went for 2/3 or 3/4 of my limit. :palm: And then everything went for a little over my bid.

And some sellers ask absolutely ridiculous prices. Others try to get rid of toxic waste ...
