Learning how to Linux has been on my "to do" list since 2003. You know, one day...
Learning Linux has been on my list since 1997. Somewhere around the office, I have a shiny disk from back then with a Redhat distribution .... never used.
Anyways, due to this here group, I did my first install of Linux Ubuntu in July of this year.
My second was Xubuntu just 2 weeks ago. Yes, you too can do it if I can.
The 7 year-old seems to have no problem with Linux; SWMBO has not even touched that computer yet, so we don't know yet.
A couple of things to check for bootable USB:
- BIOS updates of the computer
- USB 2 or 3. Older computers may not recognize new USB 3 devices.
- size of the USB device. In my link below for a different set of instructions to make a bootable USB, the partition size had to be 16MB (yes, MB).
Instructions here are for a BIOS update, but almost half of the commands are for setting up the bootable USB using the fdisk command in Linux:

Likewise, the USB was not recognized as bootable, but has been used on newer computers. I assume there is a BIOS update needed or support lacking for USB 3. The trials and tribulations of knowing something about technology...
