It does appear to be complete with no broken knobs that I can see but it certainly is filthy. Are you sure it hasn't been immersed in water? It sure looks like it.  :palm:
In fact, it never fell into the sea.  :-DD    It's just some dust, which is being cleaned up.
Why is there a short slash in front of the waveform?

Nice.

What's the timebase? Is it on both channels? Both probes?

With a BNC cable, connect the cal out to a channel set to 50 ohms input. What does that look like?

N.B. the 485 has a decent 50ohm input. Most scopes have, at best, 50ohms//15pF. Also the cal out is a 1ns step.

I hated physics too.  ;D

This would explain a lot.  ;D  :-DD

In electronics it does not matter so much if you hate physics or not. Whats really becomes a problem is when physics hates YOU. :) >:D

ok, had a so so day.
Finally my shipment of rare metals arrived.
60 grams of metal for around 3 effing grand. FFS.
Sold 2 of my motorbikes, now I only have the Milwaukee granny bobber left (the one that does not require me to lift my leg when getting onto it ...
Had a discussion with my boss why I needed a delegate. Fuck vacation, they call me even when I am in the middle of the pacific ...
I need to get a different phone number ...
Hf? Re? Np?

A couple of small disks of 241Am and Be. She already had the 3kg 239Pu  and a small phial of 3H. Apparently got a rodent problem, big rodents...

For those of us who haven't played with a chemistry set since we were 10 years old care to translate?  :-// I also hated chemistry in HS.

It's not chemistry, it's more about physics ...   :scared:

Example:

Actually it is quite dangerous to joke about these things in this country lest you get black clad visitors blowing up your front door.

So, nope, different metals. Nothing that can be used to wreak havoc with.

That's pretty much the case in most countries, though I like to hope the relevant persons are discriminating enough to tell the difference between educated people with dark humour, and dangerous people with mental health issues.

Good deal. Looks like that filthy 485 powered up after all.  :-+

Here's what the 1MHz cal waveform should look like into the 50 ohm input.

And I recommend re-capping the linear side of the PSU. That circuitry is located on the bottom board and it is modular and removes easily. There are several high value (47uf, 100uf) beaded tantalums that will give you trouble if not changed out.

And a word of experience.....do NOT ever attempt to remove the Vertical Board. Trust me on this.  |O

In other news:
Got new HDDs for Backup and for renovating my router/file server that is still running debian Squeeze.   :palm:
No dist-upgrade possible anymore -will be a new installation.
Wonder how I will cope with that systemd magic since I'm used to the old shit SystemV-init...  :-/O
Yes I know, there is e.g. Devuan around. I will play around with both a little bit.
A life without TEA is possible but pointless.

When I picked something up from RS at 9am 10 days ago, I asked someone at the front of the queue how long she had been there - since 7am. That fits with other reports in the paper for other nearby tips.

Not chemistry, physics. A DIY "physics package".

I never cease to be surprised at the number of electronics folks who seem to have an "other science" hole in their internal knowledge bases. At university all the types studying science or engineering seemed equally knowledgable and at least interested in the other science subjects (beyond their specialities) that they would have studied at secondary school. In my final residence at university we had a computer scientist, a chemist, a metallurgist, a biochemist, one oddball studying English and me. We could sit and have a conversation at supper on, say the metallurgist's final year project (stress corrosion cracking), and everybody apart from Kevin (English major) could join in and ask intelligent questions, even offer tentative solutions of the "why don't you..." variety. Even Kevin had obviously paid attention in science classes at school because he could still get the gist, if not the details.

My general assumption has always been that "sciencey types" are at least reasonably well informed on most basic science subjects, but that assumption fails more often than it succeeds when I'm dealing with "electronics types". I find that very odd.

True. However if you don't use it, you lose it. Engineering is a fairly abstract subject with a lot of kata rather than understanding. Regularly I find myself doing refreshers in A-level subjects so I don't look like an idiot to my kids. I did A-level higher mathematics, chemistry and physics and can remember precisely fuck all about any of them most of the time :)

Repairing Tek 4 series scopes is a clear case of severe masochism. Tons of RIFAs, dried out electrolytics, overheated unobtainium ICs, ... and look at all the tants !!  >:D. These boxes were never made to last nor to repair :). Just stay away and waste your time on something funnier (except you are a hardcore masochist). :)
