I was expecting a burned resistor or something like that, but other than some dust inside it's in really good condition. I cleaned everything with IPA, then used some Deoxit D5 and F5 on the switch contact. It's now good as new!

Well, idk what the previous owner was using these tips for, but they just won't re-tin.

And the answer is yes, I've tried that (unless you come up with something I never heard of before).

That's a shame... a good Oki/MetCal tip is a terrible thing to waste.

My PERSONAL opinion... having used about a dozen of both brands... spend the extra couple dollars for genuine Oki/MetCal. They use heavier tubes, and the overall fit/finish is better than Thermaltronics.  Also, a couple of my TT tips just don't perform as well with my MX500 as similar tip mass/rated temp MC tips. Not so much getting to correct temp as just not having the ooomph... the magical thermal recovery capability... that my genuine Oki/MetCal tips have. 

There has been some conjecture in some of my enginerding threads that years ago, when the people involved parted ways and some of them started ThermalTronics, the folks at Oki/MetCal figured out a way for the SmartHeat base station firmware to recognize ThermalTronics tips and deliberately eff up the PID loop so they don't work as well in a MetCal station. Whether it's that, or the development just diverged so that their firmware worked better as it was optimized for the tips they were developing, I don't know or care. The bottom line is that with my 3rd-hand boat anchor MX-500, Oki/MetCal tips just perform better.

Just buy one. That’s all you need. As mentioned I’ve had mine two years and the tip that came with it is pretty good for everything.

The reason I didn't have any of that stinky tip cleaner/tinner is because I never fucked a tip in my life. The tip on my W60D is 25 years old, and if I hadn't broken the damn barrel trying to get the tip nut off I'd still be using it.

I do want a couple of sizes. I know people dis the conical tips but I like them and never had a problem using them.
So I do want a nice fine conical tip, but also a bigger chisel tip for heavier duty jobs that aren't quite big enough for me to use the 200W gun.

My collection is long conical in 600° & 800° temps, angled conical in 575° & 860° temps (the latter is pretty much just a firestarter... but it WILL desolder fat caps in close quarters like nobody's business), a fat and tapered chisel, and a couple hoof points. Oh, and the stepped 1mm conical that came with the used handle.

For sure get a fat chisel and a long conical; next add the angled conical as it is really useful for SMD work.

Given the rush of interest in epidemiology on here (cf Covid 19), perhaps we ought to to characterize the TEA virus. What is its R₀, and what is its case fatality ratio? (For fatality, read mortal effects on your bank balance and shelf/storage space). Is marriage an effective vaccine?

R₀. Greater than 1, but I'm not sure how much. Growth rate, at least of this thread, has been pretty alarming.

Actually no alcohol intake this week other than 1/3 of a can of Abbots. The rest went in a stew. Urine is, and apologies for this, rancid tango. I drink 2L of water a day as well so it's clearly kicking something out. The engineer in me keeps a spreadsheet of course:



Grey line = obesity ... Yellow line = healthy weight. Orange line = target path. Blue line = measured path.

Has levelled out today but only one data point. It would suggest that I have been sick though! Will eat to hit the target path again.

Edit: just received Maxim MAX30100 pulse oximeter module today. Will have some fun with that once I've got these displays up

Frucking bastard STM32. If I set PB6 and PA6 as an output pin I get 1.5V on PB6 when PA6 is high and PB6 is low. Whaaaaat?!?!?!

So looking at the thing there's a 0 ohm bridge between the two pins for tarduino compatibility FFS. So move my shit to PB7 instead.

I may go looking for a strictly non Arduino dev board!

I'd have to be pretty impressively bald to go more than twenty years without a hair cut or head shave. No, very long, not as thick as it was (not a fraction as thick as I used to snap comb teeth off with my hair regularly), and heavily receded.

I cut mine when it was waist-length. Too damn much trouble at that point. Sent it in a box to a charity that makes wigs for cancer patients. They don't get a lot of almost pure white hair, two feet in length, to work with.

Don't know about R₀ and haven't done the math on the bank account (too cowardly am i) but my formally empty furnace room, now shelved from floor to ceiling suggests that it hasn't been good. Based on available data set of one, marriage is not an effective vaccine.
