I was not necessarily looking for another voltage divider, but this little ESI DP1311 popped up on ebay for 14$. Seller was mentioning some problems with the switch.

I was expecting a burned resistor or something like that, but other than some dust inside it's in really good condition. I cleaned everything with IPA, then used some Deoxit D5 and F5 on the switch contact. It's now good as new! :)

I picked up one of those from a local hamfest for about the same. They are delightful, aren't they. The feel of the switch as it rotates is almost pornographic (I'm sad to say).

Well, idk what the previous owner was using these tips for, but they just won't re-tin.

And the answer is yes, I've tried that (unless you come up with something I never heard of before).

Looks like I need to buy a selection of new ones   :-//

EDIT: Two for the US folks: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HeathKit-Capaci-Tester-Model-IT-22/184212372434
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Heathkit-Capaci-Tester-Intermittent-Capacity-Capacitor-CT-1-Powers-On/353012025141

That's a shame... a good Oki/MetCal tip is a terrible thing to waste. >:(

My PERSONAL opinion... having used about a dozen of both brands... spend the extra couple dollars for genuine Oki/MetCal. They use heavier tubes, and the overall fit/finish is better than Thermaltronics.  Also, a couple of my TT tips just don't perform as well with my MX500 as similar tip mass/rated temp MC tips. Not so much getting to correct temp as just not having the ooomph... the magical thermal recovery capability... that my genuine Oki/MetCal tips have.

There has been some conjecture in some of my enginerding threads that years ago, when the people involved parted ways and some of them started ThermalTronics, the folks at Oki/MetCal figured out a way for the SmartHeat base station firmware to recognize ThermalTronics tips and deliberately eff up the PID loop so they don't work as well in a MetCal station. Whether it's that, or the development just diverged so that their firmware worked better as it was optimized for the tips they were developing, I don't know or care. The bottom line is that with my 3rd-hand boat anchor MX-500, Oki/MetCal tips just perform better.

Just buy one. That’s all you need. As mentioned I’ve had mine two years and the tip that came with it is pretty good for everything.

The reason I didn't have any of that stinky tip cleaner/tinner is because I never fucked a tip in my life. The tip on my W60D is 25 years old, and if I hadn't broken the damn barrel trying to get the tip nut off I'd still be using it.

I do want a couple of sizes. I know people dis the conical tips but I like them and never had a problem using them.
So I do want a nice fine conical tip, but also a bigger chisel tip for heavier duty jobs that aren't quite big enough for me to use the 200W gun.

My collection is long conical in 600° & 800° temps, angled conical in 575° & 860° temps (the latter is pretty much just a firestarter... but it WILL desolder fat caps in close quarters like nobody's business), a fat and tapered chisel, and a couple hoof points. Oh, and the stepped 1mm conical that came with the used handle.

For sure get a fat chisel and a long conical; next add the angled conical as it is really useful for SMD work.

Their naming conventions will tell you what is what... but it CAN be a bit confusing: http://www.okinternational.com/metcal/english/globalnavigation/products/hand-soldering-systems/tips-and-cartridges

A bit offtopic, but on the other hand outstanding in my opinion. Lots of electronics involved though.   ;)
I was surfing youtube when I came across this cover of 'sweet child in time':

I'm relieved now. rock isn't dead when youngsters cover classic rock songs like this.
Sends me shivers down my spine like the original.  :-+

Wow! Just, wow!

I first saw her a few years ago.  Amazingly talented young lady with great musical tastes.  She's released a few albums now, too - Chi Might and Chi Might II, IIRC.

This one's from four years ago:

-Pat

Yeah... I polked around her site a bit the other day: https://girls-got-groove.com/home/ ; she's a bit of an activist for musical collaboration and very much tired of the prevalence of mixing/looping taking away the most important part of music: the chemistry of a good jam. Good for her! :-+ :-+ :-+

Given the rush of interest in epidemiology on here (cf Covid 19), perhaps we ought to to characterize the TEA virus. What is its R0, and what is its case fatality ratio? (For fatality, read mortal effects on your bank balance and shelf/storage space). Is marriage an effective vaccine?

R0. Greater than 1, but I'm not sure how much. Growth rate, at least of this thread, has been pretty alarming. ;D

Just woken up. Dreamt I had a Tek 575 last night. Wonder where that dream came from  :-DD

Oh, I don't know? Because they have this soothing glow? Because they hum in an incredibly sexy manner? Because they are like an all you can eat tube buffet?

In all seriousness, though, I suppose you found it on the bay already but if you're interested, shoot me a message and i'll do better than the eBay price.

@mnementh

Yeah I spent a couple of hours earlier going over this kind of info to figure out what tips to put in my watch list.

Thanks for the tip   :palm:  about TT versus Metcal thermal stability.

EDIT: Well, I did like the pun, but my irl name isn't Phil, so it could end up being confusing... it's Anders Van de Gevel (hence AVG) if anyone cares. The only reason I didn't choose that pun on average responding ac measurement before is, I just didn't think of it. Some of the guys at work call me AVG, so I'm kinda used to it too.

As for shotgun Lucy, I photoshopped it up a few years ago to use as an avatar, icr what forum. I accidentally uploaded the non-pixellated version at first, then remembered this is meant to be a family-friendly forum...   ::)

Actually no alcohol intake this week other than 1/3 of a can of Abbots. The rest went in a stew. Urine is, and apologies for this, rancid tango. I drink 2L of water a day as well so it's clearly kicking something out. The engineer in me keeps a spreadsheet of course:

Grey line = obesity ... Yellow line = healthy weight. Orange line = target path. Blue line = measured path.

Has levelled out today but only one data point. It would suggest that I have been sick though! Will eat to hit the target path again.

Edit: just received Maxim MAX30100 pulse oximeter module today. Will have some fun with that once I've got these displays up

Edit: just checked my 7 day average calorie intake is ~1400 calories/day so need to eat a lot more this week. HOLD MY BEER  (checking if GBK deliver still :-DD)

You weight less than I do now. Good boy!  :-+ Ever since retiring last year I gained 10 pounds and I'll be damned if I can get it back off. I was approx 175 pounds.

Edit: hahaha it's much harder and much less fun getting rid of it than putting it on  :-DD

Frucking bastard STM32. If I set PB6 and PA6 as an output pin I get 1.5V on PB6 when PA6 is high and PB6 is low. Whaaaaat?!?!?!

So looking at the thing there's a 0 ohm bridge between the two pins for tarduino compatibility FFS. So move my shit to PB7 instead.

I may go looking for a strictly non Arduino dev board!

Thank god I'm an old hippy. All this fuss about haircuts leaves me completely sanguine. The last time I had a haircut was, quite literally, last century.

Is that because you have long hair or no hair?

Only his hair dresser knows for sure but they were laid off  :-DD

I'd have to be pretty impressively bald to go more than twenty years without a hair cut or head shave. No, very long, not as thick as it was (not a fraction as thick as I used to snap comb teeth off with my hair regularly), and heavily receded.

I cut mine when it was waist-length. Too damn much trouble at that point. Sent it in a box to a charity that makes wigs for cancer patients. They don't get a lot of almost pure white hair, two feet in length, to work with.

Third, Do you have the TEA virus? Go read the first page of this thread. Then come back and let us know. New victims..err... fans of all that is test equipment hang out here.  :-/O :-DMM

And finally, show us what you got.

Don't know about R0 and haven't done the math on the bank account (too cowardly am i) but my formally empty furnace room, now shelved from floor to ceiling suggests that it hasn't been good. Based on available data set of one, marriage is not an effective vaccine.   ;D
