That's actually cheered me up a bit after spending the entire day fighting Kubnernetes :-+

We've launched VMs, because we wanted to solve the problems with the distributions.
We've launched Container, because we wanted to solve the problems with the VMs.
We've launched Docker, because we wanted to solve the problems with Container.
We've launched Kubernets, because we wanted to solve the problems with Docker.

And now we want to launch Serverless, because we want to spend more money to Amazon. Oh, wait, to solve the problems with Kubernets.

And here is a nice deployment diagram:

...this is why i don't long to return to my days of deploying commercial software systems.   :-DD

If the buckets were tradies (blokes/lasses with tools), and everything else was managers, that would be a diagram of how Facilities Management works in local government.

Looks like we might have to lay off Andre

Actually, push has come to shove, and they've found that,

(a) They need the people that can use the tools

and (b) They need to increase their pay to at least 75% of the going rate or they won't have anyone to manage.

Not saying what local authority I work for (ubiquitous NDA), but that is the current situation, and we're about to get to vote on their latest derisory offer.

Personally I wouldn't mind a few strike days, but sometimes, something is better than nothing as they say, and given the constraints imposed on local gov by national gov, I reckon it's about as good as we'll get (after a 2 year+ negotiation).

The upshot is, we (the people that do the work) will get a pay rise that narrows the gap to what we should be paid, and they (the feckwits in the office) will have to find ways to save money without reducing the operational workforce for a change.

To the HP restorers here. Is there anything useful inside this that might be worth having? For €25 it's got to be good for spares? https://www.ebay.de/itm/202911205862

Don't look at me; I'm just on lunch break from a massive furniture repair & deploy I've been on all week. Totally rearranging the house.

Sitting here eating a chicken & Swiss on Everything Bagel sandwich, and grinning as I nibble a cold, crisp Polish Dill pickle... I am SO thankful I don't have to even THINK about charts like that right now...  :phew:

I may have to dive right back into that hot mess tomorrow with both feet... but NOT today. ;)

For those who were around during the discussion of HP serial number prefixes and what they mean, I saw a different verbiage used in the manual for the HP 70205A/70206A display -- one I hadn't seen before -- so I thought I'd share it. It's more informative than most other HP manuals with regard to the prefix.

"The prefix is coded for the date of the last configuration change and is the same for all identical displays; a prefix break or change only occurs when a significant modification is made to the product. The letter designates the country of origin. The suffix is assigned sequentially and is different for each display."

Well we already have to buy all our own tools, though there is a no interest credit scheme to help buy power tools.

And fyi they already have purchasing managers that phone around (approved) suppliers (that have submitted the relevant paperwork within the appropriate timeframe) to find the cheapest source of 20mm blind grommets.

It's not unusual for jobs to be heavily delayed by management failing to order specialised items (such as oddball light fittings, which they seem to like, despite the fact that when it comes time to repair said items, they'll not be repairable or even replaceable, having become obsolete) and then complaining that we, the tool bearing simians, are not working fast enough.

Oh well there are pros as well as cons. Just give me a minute and I'll remember what they are...

Thanks! It goes straight into the devlopr Slack channel at work. Serves them right to read a bit German.

My reflection on this development (entanglement is probably a better term. ) is that this adds layers upon layers of kludges because people are actively uninterested in dealing with problems by fixing them at the root.

As a complete antithesis to this I today set up a new separate DHCP and DNS server at work for a network that needs to be very isolated. OpenBSD 6.6 on an old desktop. I had to install exactly 0 packages beyond the base OS. Nothing. All I need is included. It is blazingly fast. Consumes no resources to speak of. Very predictable. Very clean.

And do note that I'm talking BGP with the core network, running anycast DNS resolvers and DHCP failover on it (and its sibling that's due to be installed next week).   Not your average dnsmasq click-next luser install.

No systemd. No node.js. No Python with significant whitespace. No web frameworks. No libs and packages that must install by the "curl | sudo bash" method.  No "I wrote this shit using all the quirks in version 2.65.older.than.you.like of HipsterLib so you are in dependency Hell".

Just a well functioning bare-metal Unix machine. I was truly happy for a while. Even if I had to go down in the machine room, find a monitor cart and make it work there.

Nope, because there're all managers in some way or other  :palm: They would do well to remember this, the true definition of a manager:-

A manager is a person who achieves results through the efforts of others,  :-DD :-DD

Take away the others, and they are about as useful as a sack full of shit, as they say, those who can DO and those who can't become managers  :-DD

That certainly was the trouble with my last company I worked for, management increased all the time, workforce shrank but the workforce was tasked with an ever-increasing workload for in effect a decreasing reward and zero respect for their efforts.

I work on the following principle of management.

1. Manager tells me what to do and the period in which to do it in.
2. I agree entirely and say yes etc.
3. Then I go and do exactly what the fuck I think is right which is completely the opposite to 2.
4. Manager is now faced with the dilemma of admitting that I didn't do anything he asked and looking like a bad manager or taking credit for it.
5. Inevitably the type it attracts tend to go to the second option at which point I now own them.
6. After Nth attempt the manager is tea boy and just does what I ask so I can keep giving him things that are good to report back.

Yep, managers are good at taking the credit for your efforts, and in fact your method was indeed my method as well and indeed worked up to a point where I would always commit to writing what I had done, or required in order to progress to next level, which worked until the management grew to such an extent that I was told on many occasions that nobody had the time to read my many requests, but to save time make such requests verbally. This even came down to me from the MD on many occasions and I become accused of being a keyboard warrior etc. and getting peoples backs up, but verbal requests were adequate.

I tried verbal requests but these were subsequently denied had been made, and I was then asked why if the verbal request had been ignored had I not put it into writing. I also discovered that things I told my manager verbally had taken and passed onto his superior as if my achievements had come about as a direct result of his management input and that without his direction and instructions, I was like a coat hanger on a rail, waiting to be taken down and told what to do. So forgive me if anyone thinks I have a rather jaundiced viewpoint of management. I do and it comes from a lifetime of observations and one only has to look at some managers CV to observe this first hand at the sheer number of jobs they have had since becoming senior management, some lasting only a few months, and yet these were the very people telling me what how I should be doing my role, one that I have many years of being successful in, but to become more successful required the company to make an investment in some additional "tools" and they didn't want to invest a few miserly 100's of £ because of their lack of understanding the problems, because local management was making the claims that were directly responsible for the work I was bringing in, and I was not prepared to follow all their instructions.

I decided to it was time to retire and since I have been retired I hear through the grapevine that they have suffered badly because they could not recruit a suitable replacement for my role and my local manager and his superior who had been so dominant that their methods worked and mine didn't, were also unable to fill my boots and so that particular function with the company now no longer exists. When a company has more Chiefs than Indians then clearly something is wrong.

I'm kinder than that.

In the decent organisations in which I have worked, the prime responsibilities of a manager are to
  • set objectives, usual in conjunction with all parties
  • do whatever is necessary to ensure their minions can succeed

@tggzzz: the HP way. Recent change has brought that to my reality at last  :-+

@Specmaster: Yep that’s about it. Deep management hierarchies are how you burn a business. One reason I went into contracting originally was the isolation between their business and my business. Fortunately I’ve spent the last decade purposely working myself into a comfortable niche which is mostly free of management for the sake of management. This has played out very well in the last month or two  8)

I think the worst place I worked was a defence contractor with a graded pay scheme. This defined the hierarchy thus as grade F staff there were 5 layers of shit above me :palm:.

Feeling the need for an HP 6235A for cute factor  :-DD. Unfortunately only Israeli vendors and as usual they’ve seen some Hamas action by the looks  :palm:
