I am trying to tell myself I don't 'need' a #7 as I am only doing this for fun and home projects it most likely makes more sense than a planer/thicknesser in my case.
7's are cool but kinda more specialized than a 6. They share the same iron but the additional weight and length of a 7 makes for much easier truing of timber. The biggest job I undertook with one was a 8'x3' rough sawn table top and much of it was knotted so had to be tackled carefully and done like draw filing so to not lift the grain. It came out tops and still has pride of place as our dining table.

4, 5, 7, block and a router plane is a sensible set I reckon  ;)
4's and 5's are dogs IMHO even though that's what we were issued as apprentices and I've much preferred a 3 and a 6 as the jacks of all trades. Another, a 4 1/2 IIRC was a novel thing very much like a 4 but with the iron right to the edge like a rabbit plane and it could do basic duty as such but you didn't have fences, edge scorer and depth gauge like say a 78. Never seen another one like the old chippy I worked with had but a few years back grabbed a 3 when I saw one pop up on our NZ Trademe.

My hands wouldn't fit into a #3 I would have to hold the body ;) The 4 1/2 has a rabid fan boy base because X woodworking youtube head uses one  :palm: and some sheep buying uber Expensive new ones of them and has pushed the secondhand pricing up. Even the really rough Router Plane would have got me a Scope delivered in Oz with change  :o I have only used a #4 since school so the #5 has been a really nice thing for more serious use but for flattening slabs I can see where it lacks. The little Makita trim router covers me fairly well instead of the specials planes for a casual user.

You really really NEED a 3D printer  :-DD

If your mitts are really that big then just use ya fingers, yunno because it's gunna be that sharp because of that iron jig I sent ya !
No, really you'll hang onto a 3 just fine. My youngest spotted it and swiped the bloody thing and gave back my 4 that he'd swiped earlier but I know exactly where it is in his/my/our shed down the farm so it's a short hop to get it should I get the urge to fondle use it again.

But if you team it with a Laser then you could make this really nice looking Router Circle jig  :-DD Stopper/pivot just came off the printer and now it has cooled down time to fire up the Laser and tomorrow put it to use  ;D

Several 5s, bunch of 6s, two 7s, an 8 with a broken/repaired cap, two 45s, two 78s, oh and yes a router. Almost had some more 7s when I was just starting to get into woodworking but I thought they were too pricey. They were not ,of course, and gone before I could get back to the sale.

I'm a horrible woodworker, a novice carpenter, my plumbing doesn't leak but the pro's stuff did. Journeyman electrician and of course TEA!

Oh and I learned something from the Tek PCB video.  Gold as etchent resist, seems really costly. But of course the ferric chloride can't touch it.

Chainsaw lacks subtlety and I think you have been on 'the farm' to long  ;)

A bit like TEA it is nearly cheaper to buy planes from the US than locally. Sell me a #7 and buy more TEA  ;D

Now I need to get rid of the "school photo" wallpaper  :-DD

Nice chair, mine is similar, very comfy and glad to see that you have the computer in the best place, on the floor under the bench to maximise bench space  :-+

I have a small chainsaw...  around 16".   Bought when a tree fell down and blocked the driveway!  -  It has been surprisingly useful on occasion, mostly to clear up storm damage or perform surgery on dead trees etc.

I'm surprised how much you can cut with even a tiny chainsaw like this...  even if you have to take "chunks"...

Now how many Stanley 45's do I have, at least a couple and in their original boxes.  :P
Plus a 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 and a few assorted rabbit, block and bullnose planes.

"Rabbet", "rabbet plane" not "rabbit". Rabbit planes are strictly for psychopaths.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Ahh yeah I hate that floor. Hate it. Haven't touched it for around 10 years. Will turd polish the damn thing when we move and leave it at that.

Apparently my copy of the X chapters is out for delivery, a day late but nevertheless hopefully it does turn up today.
