Sounds like my grandfather and the radio. My grandmother signed up for a Rediffusion rental when he was out one day  :-DD
That reminds me of the time when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, My mum throw out dads old radio set and signed up a Christy Bros piped radio. This consisted of a portable wooden cabinet with something like 6" speaker and a side mounted volume control, a few yards of 2 core cable terminated in 2 pin plug. Then I think we had in the kitchen and living room a small wall mounted 5 position rotary switch and 2 pin socket box for the speaker to be plugged in. It had the BBC 4 stations of the day and off on the wall box.

Mum said she did that because dad would not leave the radio alone, she'd just be getting into a program, when dad would tune in to a different statin and drive her mad.  ::)

Putting the B channel to the left of the A channel is suitably odd.

What with driving on the other side of the road, pulling faders DOWN to increase gain, having "4" on a meter scale indicate 0dB, enumerating mixing desk channels right to left, and rage-quitting the most prosperous loose federation of countries on the earth, having "B" left of "A" is just keeping in style of consistent back-asswards behaviour.

 :-DD

And don't get me started about the habit of measuring people in "stone".

Then there's the difference between how household light switches work. In Sweden, the light goes on when the switch is up, in the UK when it's down.

Putting the B channel first is particularly perverse though.

I've got a little project here, where I'm going to do a slightly overcomplicated version of same. Kitchen speakers today are fed from a central matrix where I've got a bunch of sources available, streaming box, record player, CD, tuner, my two shortwave radios, etc. The tuner (Denon surround receiver) has a serial interface, so am going to hack a rotary dial to change the channel (and matrix inputs as well) remotely. I think it'll be a china mini-Arduino, some debouncers and pulse shaping IC's, and an Ethernet interface to send off commands to the unit aggregating all commands, probably with MQTT.

I changed all the light switches in our house for ON to be down when we moved in. It seems the "correct" way to be for me, but annoys the shit out of any German visitor.

And then there's the "trappomkopplare" with two switches alternating like so:

917534-0

Then you never know which is which...

I call that XOR switching (as it's essentially an XOR gate) and we have that too for the stair/hallway lighting. No choice there as to which way is ON.

In the US, that is commonly known as 'three way' switching - I'm not sure where that comes from other than that the switches used have three terminals rather than the normal two present on a standard SPST light switch.  To control a light from three or more locations, additional '4 way’ switches (with, surprise surprise, FOUR terminals) are placed in series with the two traveler conductors.  When toggled, they swap the in and out wires, making or breaking the circuit no matter which switch in the chain you throw.

Standard and Legal in Victoria at least. The Aussie domestic switches generally have a loop terminal partly for that purpose. Three Way switching is a normal term here too.

And yep always down for On otherwise  ;)

And yet, if my memory serves me right, when it comes to switches in your cars, UP=OFF how perverse is that?

Well that is really odd, because in the most common application i.e. stairs in a house, there are traditionally 2 switches so it should be called 2 way switching. Other applications of that type of control would be corridors and i long corridors there may well rooms with their doors opening onto the corridor and as such, would have a switch adjacent to each doorway. Such an installation could be called Xway switching where X=number of switches in the circuit.

Don't know what this discussion is all about switching positions. If it's dark, I'll push the switch as long as the lights turn on. End of story.  :-//  :D

Try it the other way round, and you will find it surprisingly disconcerting!

Hmm, not sure that I understand what you are meaning.

I'll try to describe it in a more general manner.

state of the lights:   X (where X can be "lights on" or "lights off")
opposite state:  -X

changing state from X to -X: push the switch as long as the state has successfully changed.  :-+

You're absolutely right. The state of the lamp is determined by whether I can see or not, not by the position of the switch.

If I can't see, the switch needs moving to the other position than the one it currently has.

I don't think twice about the Swedish orientation of the switch, despite growing up in a country where it's the opposite of what it is here.

Quick lunch time fix. PM3217.

Old transformer that has failed. Shame because it's a really really nice one.

After 10 minutes of Dremelling and drilling, new Meanwell unit mounted and doing burn in now. So far so good:

These things are sooooo much easier to work on and so much better documented than Teks are. Sorry  :-DD
