Over on the Book of Faces I participate in a group "Old Tek Scopes". Someone brought up the subject of Mr Carlson's videos and it generated a surprising number of negative comments. I happen to think Paul is very knowledgeable and I defended him. Well some individual in need of a tin foil hat to keep out of sight of the black helicopters decided to go toe-to-toe with me and I'll let you read the hilarity.
And I don't care that my real name appears. Most of you know who I am anyway.
Michael Donnelly Gee, all the hate in here. I don't get it. I have a lot of respect for Paul Carlson. He is extremely skilled and knowledgeable. And he takes the time to completely explain his reasoning, methods, and above all, the dangers. His videos are viewed by individuals who range from complete novices to experts. So he tailors the videos to his least knowledgeable audience. That's just good common sense but to experts like us it may seem condescending. It is not.
And this ridiculous comment about his always clean bench. So what? I adhere to the same regardless if my project is a success or a total failure. I HATE a messy bench.
Jim Yohe Very well said Michael.
Joe Clark +1, why the hate? if you don't like him, don't watch his videos! WTF is the problem? I think the haters are jealous because they can't admit they are less knowledgeable than My Carlson, so hate is a must, and bad mouthing, and generally being arrogant condescending assholes themselves, The left for ya.
Jamie Ostrowski Yeah and the other thing is why don't all these condescending "experts" make their own videos? Too lazy to share their information the way Mr Carlson does. I've actually learned a lot from him. Kudos to him for going the trouble to introduce troubleshooting principles on vintage electronics diagnosis and repair.
Leonard Martin All that flash, charm, cleanliness, and order paints an inaccurate picture of electronic repair and experimentation, as done by ordinary people.
My own experiences of it as a ham were dogged by my ignorance (as a non-pro), causing frequent mistakes and failures, which were very demoralizing.
And of course the work is necesarily somewhat dirty, and often tiring.
In short, electronic repair for ordinary people is a struggle. This guy sells them a false dream of easy competence and clean and orderly work leading always to success.
It's kinda the porn of electronic tinkering.
Michael Donnelly It seems to me that if you find electronic repair a "struggle, dirty, tiring" that perhaps you need to find a different hobby. I find it to be just the opposite.
Leonard Martin This is the reality. Mr. C. conceals carefully it through the magic of video. Anyone who tries to develop such a complex skill without an actual human mentor on the scene whose experience can short-circuit some of the struggles will experience this.
Learning of manual-and-intellectual skills via video is a trap for the unwary.
Leonard Martin On the other hand, if you happen to be an experienced repairman, as you seem to be, you might enjoy watching Mr. C.'s fake perfection, as a kind of idealized version of what you do.
Michael Donnelly....... Leonard Martin With all due respect....you have no facts to back up your assertions of what Paul does or does not do behind the scenes. Nor do you know how he obtained his skills. Everything you state seems nothing more than "sour grapes" or perhaps professional jealousy. I suggest you quit while you're ahead and step away from the keyboard.
Leonard Martin Nope. It's standard American flash and misrepresentation, a guy painting a pretty false picture of himself and what he does via the manipulation possible in video.
Along the lines of that that looming practitioner of the same thing we have to put up with for a while more, Donald Trump.
Michael Donnelly ….......Leonard Martin "American Flash" as you say? FYI Paul Carlson is Canadian. Shows what you know. And the comparison to Trump is just plain stupid
Jamie Ostrowski....... Leonard Martin it isn't polite to bring up politics in this forum.
Leonard Martin Give me a break!
Michael Donnelly........ Leonard Martin Aren't you the same individual who criticized those of us who collect Tek scopes as a hobby? (BTW..I have 11) If I'm not mistaken I believe you are. I have to question why you participate in this group. Just to be an annoyance or look silly...or perhaps both?
