I pulled out the subchassis 3 = Audio + BFO. There is a lot of work inside, this will take time.

Anyone have a stash of 2W Resistors, preferably stateside? I need a 27 Ohm 2W resistor to finish fixing the 106 and I am (unsurprisingly, I think) reluctant to pay between 8 and 18 USD in shipping fees for a 0.35 USD part. 

My alternative is to construct a 2W resistor or wait until I build up $50 worth of other parts to order from Arrow. I can't believe I don't have something in my junk box but I don't.  Not even close.  Ugh. Just Ugh.

I have a good surplus store that has tons of that sort of stuff near me. Want me to go see if they have anything like that?

I may take you up on that but first I want to check something... after I posted, I remembered the "left in the rain" 468, which is still in the garage. I am going to see if there is there's something close enough somewhere in there.

BTW, since you are in that neck of the woods, it might be worth checking out the vintage tek museum in Beaverton. Not only do they have a fantastic collection, they also have hard to find parts and things last I heard.

@med: this guy is considering buying a 7904, figure you might have better repairability insights for him than I do.

Still, I was able to find the time to do something. I was tired to always unplug the leads on the mutimeters to plug a new one with a different connector. So I ordered some 2mm probe tip adaptor.



No need to switch the leads anymore 

Interesting... So the adapter has an internal lantern spring...?

There's a dude who sells kits on the HPAK list but they are expensive. As in as much as the damn generator usually costs.

Incidentally the one here went for £67 broken and buyer collects which was more than I was going to bid anyway by £7

I was watching that one too, the seller updated the listing as they tested it further, but the counter was still dead. Mine cost me £50 with no options and a much longer trip to pick it up, I bought a set of the brass gears but still haven't got round to fitting them, going to have to get it sorted now there are a few 200-400 MHz scopes here now.

Took a chance and bought an used Noisecom noise source from one of those sellers in Israel

Noisecom are making some really nice noise source, but I could not find any information on the one I bought. Model number NC4327. The device was supposed to be functional but when it arrived, I tested the supply and it was shorted. I contacted the seller and was fully refunded. Great, got a broken noise source for free 



I opened up the device and simply started testing all the tantalum capacitor one by one. The capacitor directly on the input just before the 7815 was shorted. Replaced by a similar capacity ceramic cap and the device is now working.




Now the moment of truth, Let's find out what this noise source is outputting.

Now I will probably try to extract the noise source diode and use it with some modern amplifiers to see I can crank up the frequency range.

We're in Cincinnati, visiting an old friend before heading out to my cousin's place in Cleveland.

A little visiting, watching some of the old shows... Good times.

look for a Rohde+Schwarz SKTU,
it makes the nois with a glowing diode. But if you need some mV from that you have to insert a preamplifier for spectrum analyzers to push it up bec. the noise level is only enough for testing receivers, not more.

Öhm, I looked all around but I cannot spot the silver coil? 

What I see:
- a questionable electrolyte capacitor
- some resistors
- some ceramic caps
- some silver wire
- a ceramic varicap
- some tube sockets
- on the lower left, this could be a aluminium shielded filter
- on the right side there is a sealed round silver case which I cannt figure out what it is

But no silver coil so far ...

the siver case is the coil from the BFO 
the red caps are replacement for EROID.
the large ceramic caps, oftenly 2 or 3 parallel, are sorted by low temperature drifting, so they use oftenly 2 or more where one will do the job also

I also picked up a metre of black and red 16g silicone cable from him to go with them.  20cm per adapter lead seems reasonable.

It's really hard to find used Rohde+Schwarz instrument here. Could buy a HP noise source but that would be way too expensive for my purpose and really boring.

I guess the next step is designing a PCB that will fit in the noise com metal box.
