Three reasons (1) import duty buggery (2) I need it this week to measure some inductors I'm building not in a month (3) peak offer repair/calibration and beyond excellent support.

(4) support British economics.  :-+  ;D

They needs it, what with their government making a fool of itself and all. Poor britons, what have they done to themselves?

What difference a day makes....

The Tek Type 114 according to FedEx left Missouri and now the delivery date is this Friday rather than October 2nd. I'll believe that when it arrives.  ::)

The tunnel diodes are enroute to my PO. Will get tomorrow.

The Mouser parts order is in Connecticut for transfer to USPS. That should also arrive tomorrow.

Can you imagine if this TEA thread would be locked for politics discussions?

AFAIK this thread is most of the forum so probably yeah  :-DD

I think if such a thing happened we'd probably end up with a TEA forum.

ok.....seriously guys.....talk me off the ledge.

it weighs 64 lbs!  more even than the 141t that went out the door years ago because it was too bulky and too heavy.

(BUT it is easily within local pick up range.)

somebody tell me it is useless and prone to spontaneous combustion.

There's only so much you can do with a SA that doesn't come with a TG (RF source) and expect to spend as much again for one. IIRC that bumps the weight for the pair to 100+lbs.  :scared:

We can dabble a political foot in the water here and there and as long as we keep it civil and then quickly get back on subject it should stay under the radar.

But extended or detailed political discussions?  Nope.  :--

It also worries me the display doesn't seem full width but that might just be a CRT issue but if you're happy with diving into these parts it still might be worth the punt.

Still, you have to find a TG for it so that it's to be truly useful !  :P

freqq, you've been here long enough to know that seeking voices of reason (at least by conventional standards) among THIS lot is a fool's errand!  If, however, you seek validation and encouragement for your GAS, you've come to the right place!   >:D >:D >:D

Positives -
It's relatively local
Mostly intact knobs
At least powers up

As for the no trace, that could be because it looks like some of the buttons to select modes and whatnot have NOTHING selected - if you look at the photos closely, you'll see that the buttons for sweep mode, frequency span and amplitude scale are all in the out position, and if I'm not mistaken, at least one of each must be selected.  I think the green colored ones are the 'start here' settings that put it into a sort of default operating mode.

Negatives -
This is the TEA thread - there is no such thing as a negative as long as you can muster the $$ and have space for it.

If it jams, force it.  If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway...

I keep telling you guys - resistance is not futile, it is voltage divided by current!   |O

There was also an electrolytic added, on the back of the board, which has leaked and disconnected itself in the process...

I am going to remove the bad cap and clean up the board around it. Then I am going to document the modifications, (which aren't on the schematics I have).  I am going to assume that the mods are there for a reason and leave them in place, though I am wondering about the electrolytic...

Looks like a wet tantalum capacitor with the dual temp/voltage ratings, these can leak with age and cause the corrosion you see, not sure what the type from the picture is but HP often used Sprague 109D wet tants, check & replace if leaking/corroded.

Note: wet tants can even leak their contents if not used, I binned quite a few NOS ones at work for this reason, the remaining ones and all the other redundant components from work are now mine. I only managed to sort the transistors & Zeners last winter, need to sort the capacitors & IC's this winter.

If only I didn't have this hearty dislike for all things with the name GRUNDIG on it ... ;)

the question of the day:

who was the manufacturer of this Grundig UZ144?   :-//
it`s a OEM from the FEG2 (Rohde&Schwarz, München)
Yes, I've seen it somewhere in the original R&S form.

Martin isn't the only one here with a taste for capsaicin!  I regularly use ghost pepper salsa on all things Mexican style and am awaiting some samples of Reaper Sauce from a friend.  Anyone else here have an affection for things that burn you from both ends??

Most definitely.  Love habanero salsa on eggs for breakfast.  I have had ghost pepper hot wings, damn.  I have not tried ghost pepper salsa.  Funny story on reaper sauce.  Mrs GreyWoolfe and I were spending the weekend in St Augustine, FL some time ago.  She found a boutique store dedicated to all things hot sauce.  They had the best horse radish we have ever tasted.  The gent behind the counter offered samples of reaper sauce on small wooden sticks for those with the nerve.  Myself and a young lady were interested, Mrs GreyWoolfe noped out.  I dipped the tip of my finger for a very small drop.  Hot as hell but had a good taste.  The young lady licked the stick.  That was truly a Kodak moment. :-DD  She ran and grabbed a bottle of water out of the cooler case and drank it. :-DD :-DD  We had to leave at that point so I wouldn't laugh out loud.  Never had a burn from both ends, thankfully.

Totally 100% agree, trouble they take perfectly sane, non racists down with them. The irony here is that as that vote was 3.5 years ago, the demographics have all changed and as such if the vote was now, the result is much more likely to 60% v 40% in favour of remain.

I have one, picked it up for a similar price. As long as the front panel mechanisms aren't trashed, it works pretty well. However, the 8566A/B is a way better instrument to use. Really no comparison. However, for the price the 69B isn't terrible.

I am on the road, so my bench is about 1200 miles from here but yes, it is a wet tant, and definitely leaked.  It looks like a post manufacturing mod and I haven't figured out why it is there. The unit works, more or less, without it but I will try to figure out why it was added before I replace it.

@med, that really does look really nice, good job, keep this up and all of your TEA kit in your lab will soon be colour coordinated  :-DD :-DD

Since all my projects are held up due to parts in limbo land the Fluke 8050A is getting the treatment. Reveal later today.

And here it is, done. The 8010A is only one left to do but ran low on paint.

hey papa smurf........that looks pretty good!
