Just got D75. 100% write off. Caps have destroyed the board. The guy did a fairly good repair attempt on it with some decent Kemet caps but didn't clean up the mess. It has wicked up the transformer wires and they are all crumbling  :--. Absolutely no way of saving this one.

I know people who need parts for these so I'm stripping them down and doing that instead.

Gonna pursue a refund?

I cannot understand this. Using decent parts, change them on the board but do not cleaning the mess from the spilled out electrolyte?  :palm:  :-//
It should be really obvious to clean this mess first before solder any new parts.

Nah not at all. It was listed accurately. The seller was honest about it. I took the risk so it's fair. My plan B was stripping it so I will proceed with that. It's got a lot of decent grade sheet alu in it and a ton of decent transistors - cheaper than buying them :-DD. I know a few people who need parts for D83/D83 anyway so it's going in that direction too. Either way, I get a good enough win out of it  :-+

I think the damage was done a long time ago. I had a D83, many pages back in this thread, that the same thing happened to. The shitty Plessey caps leaked in it. The PCB was and transformer wires were buggered way before he tried to repair. He picked good caps and soldered them in well but damage was done so he gave up. You win some, you lose some.

Two of the wires broke off when I moved them. So I figured it was just the joints. So I cut 2mm off the end then stripped them and the wires are powder inside  :--. This was repeated a few times carefully until I reached the transformer - there's not even enough to lap solder some new wires on.

No way of opening the transformer and putting new leads on it?  Probably won't have affected anything inside...

Maybe thats an indication of the sort of age where that's more then likely going to be the case unless it been though the hands of one of us recently to help preserve them?

It's a toroidal one unfortunately so would need unwrapping then reinsulating. I don't have the kit to do it and the return on the investment of doing that is low.

I've also found out that whatever goop was inside it appears to have corroded legs off transistors.

The point is moot however as someone is coming to collect it tomorrow for the plugins for what I paid for it  :-DD

This looks rather interesting:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333188748845

Based on https://github.com/ttrftech/NanoVNA

https://youtu.be/aA4bugrGYVA

After doing a bit of research, I decided to buy one of these (the original developed by Hugen) and compare it against the DG8SAQ VNWA.  Even if it is only good to 50MHz it will be a useful piece of gear to have in the field. Plus it reminds me of all the small, interesting Autek kit from long, long ago.

834396-0  I was actually thinking of getting into one of those for testing CPW antennas for my FPV quads... but so many reputable manufacturers (no, seriously) hit the scene with sub-$20 kits (tuned pairs) that it just wasn't worth making my own anymore. Anything I need to plot I can do a quick thumbnail with my IRC Power Meter and a yardmeterstick... and it's already optimized for 5.8GHz.  :-//

And the bling shot of some of the TEA because it was in the area
>:D

Everybody hit the deck! bean's gone META!!! :-DD

Pah.

Here's my 1991 handheld computer, with a beautifully readable display, even in full sunlight. Note that it runs a full version of Lotus 123.

Weight: 290g. Weight of manual 1200g.

Started up again? It's not over until the last equals button and the button pusher is 6 feet under  :-DD

Edit: I am trying to peel an LM723. I don't have a vice so this turns out to be a hell of a lot more difficult than it looks. Trying tin opener next  :-DD

Yes, and you can see the stack and registers.

I didn't include a photo of that because it would infuriate some people  :)

swmbo just brought me lunch.

salad out of a bag, with some tuna out of a pouch sprinkled on top.

gidget jumped up, sniffed the damn thing, then turned and walked away.   because even she won't touch tuna out of an aluminized plastic pouch.

suspect that the rabbits out on the lawn would also refuse salad out of a bag.

ate it however.  don't want swmbo to think we don't appreciate her misguided attempt to keep me healthy.

Hahaha fuck Mjolnir (the HP 6286A) just took its first victim. Built a small output stage for a low power audio amp. Well it turns out I had the meter on the 12A range when I set the current limit to 800mA so it was 8A at 24V. There was a short between VCC and ground. One of the two bits of wire from the power supply just basically instantly caught fire and the place now stinks  :-DD

perhaps you are right.  maybe it is time to give up the fight.

they can't help themselves.........rpn is a disease.  most were infected early in life and will never recover.

after all...... we tolerate tek-fever and fluke madness in others.  why not rpn insanity? (maybe bd can find an "=/enter" cap, and we can all just get along?)

ps  am still thankful no such illness has ever stricken me.
