Holy crap....just submitted order to re-cap the 485 PSU. Nearly $65 USD.  :o :o Had to order axial aluminum caps because of height restrictions and the supply also uses some high value (100uf) tants. And I did order a replacement tant for that +13V supply on the Sweep board. Other than that for now the rest of the tants will remain.
You can always sub tants with electrolytics of the same value providing you also bypass them with a ceramic.

I accomplished nothing on the 485 today because of the panic phone call but it did burn in all day with no smoke and no issues.  :-+

The Philips PM3217 cost me about $45 as well and the 1740A about $30 in parts so far. This shit is expensive to maintain :)

Reading the manual on the 618B and it has four capacitors in it, 4U 2000V, that are almost impossible to get replacements for. Any ideas? Short of throwing money at the problem or praying to the moon in the middle of the night that is.

Really? 4µF/2000V and then four of them? Wow, that's a lot of energy stored in them.
And they are probably huge. Could you provide a picture of them?

Here, for comparison, two Bosch MP capacitors, 6,3µF and 2µF

Edit:
Found these chaps here in ebay Germany: 1µF / 2000V ca. EUR 90.- / piece  :scared:

Sure I can and will post a picture of them... just as soon as i actually get it. The 618B is the one off ebay, coming in the mail, i just know what caps I need thanks to the manual I dug up online.

Just as an idea, if you have enough space:

two of them in series gives you 20µF / 2200V which should be sufficient.  :D

Let me know, if I can help you.  :)

Never heard of that technique. What value ceramic would you use? I have heard of subbing a tant would require an aluminum 2x or 3x the current value.

Unfortunately axial caps are much more expensive and the PSU is mounted on the bottom and if you use radial caps they may not clear the cover.

Singular worries me. Look at C911, C861, C962. The latter smooths the 13V reference input to the 741 "regulator", and C861 is in parallel with C911 but on schematic 7.

Apart from that, if you want to have awkward tant replacements, have a look at recapping a Tek 1502. Axial with very little room in any direction. I refuse to admit to using some non-axial electrolytics with sleeves on their legs.

I just checked my previous orders from Mouser, and I believe the following part number is what I used to replace mine in the 485.  I used ring terminals, nuts, and leads with heat shrink to adapt to the original screws.  Not that it matters much now, as they're out of stock and you've already ordered some, so this is purely for reference.

Part # is B43254B2567M000

Yes because you want to maintain the HF component of tanks.
Bypass with 0.1+ uF and for those 100uF tants I’d use 0.47uF or whatever you have lying around.

Tants are commonly used as remote bulk capacitance as their HF capabilities exceed electrolytics and as they aren’t the primary PSU smoothing their compactness is very attractive to the designers.

We changed the battle plan a bit... found a moving company that'll let us fill a 28ft trailer and store it for us just this side of the border until our immigration schizz is finalized. We expect to be on the road with a small trailer containing just our personal stuff sometime between the 9th and the 15th.

As you might imagine, we've been busy. These last two weeks have been brutal; I've been sick and liquid air with heat in the triple digits.  |O

Will start a for sale thread from now on with this as the details will get lost in the daily noise  ;D

Tweaked the rear penis guard to 40mm centre which will be under  the diameter of nearly every motor.

Ordered hardware for the first dozen+ and I already have good Laser cuttable ply in stock to cover them. Prototypes were only done from rubbish off the rack ply as it is cheap but cuts dirty. Changed the threaded inserts to these too btw https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32887767159.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.6a204c4dBSYpkz

This looks like a good candidate fan and then wind it back to 5-6V for noise. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32987312056.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.4ec62e0eMXDpO5

Anyone that expressed interest here gets a spot on the list from the first batch if they want when I list it.

I am probably going to buy the scope. I'd love the buy the 575, too, but I don't have a place to set it up or, at this point, even to store it.

I reposted my "looking for TE" ad on craiglist. Maybe that was not such a good idea.   :-DD

I will spend the weekend looking a couple of piles of gear and see if it is work buying. One pile probably isn't - mostly stuff from the early sixties - and one probably is. Plus there's the tek scope and the curve tracer, which is probably sitting in front of a bench full of other gear.

You do get the occasional night when it's so hot, you simply can't sleep.  Crawl into bed, toss and turn - then at 1am you just get up because there's no point trying to sleep.  If you wander out front, you might encounter a neighbour or two similarly affected ... and have a chat.

Let it snow. I don't care. Typically first snow is usually end of November but we did get a freak snow storm once on October 4th. Caused a lot of damage because the trees still had leaves on them.

The preposition "into" was meant in the generic sense - not specifically demanding that there were any bedclothes placed over oneself.  "Go to bed" might have been a better phrase.
