To get away from 20's era battery sets and back onto test gear, I finally got ambitious and got the Agilent 8644B that arrived from the 'bay around Christmas back up and running.  It had a shorted cap in one of the modules.




I realize that the modules are needed for shielding and ease of construction, and that capability-wise it blows the older gear out of the water, but it still looks kinda boring inside compared to the old stuff that's packed to the gills with visible circuit boards.

Starting to wonder if the dills at Pittney Bowes in Erlanger are on Chinese New Years as well. 6 days since my 5326B moved 

edit : Wonder what the problem might be..

The insulation of the wire on the torroid is all bubbly near the solder - they obviously overheated it!!  Yeah, that's gotta be it - the electrons are leaking out there.  Get a new one and replace it, and use a pliers on the wire to protect that enamel when you solder it!!

OK, I'll bite. Where were you for the Vulcan pic? My guess would be Brean Down, but I'm suspicious of the angle.

I took a relative to watch the last flight past W-s-Mud; he was delighted since he was an apprentice at Filton in the 60s. Watching a heavy bomber stand on a wingtip ought to be impossible, but we saw it that day.

Thanks, i liked the pink tinge to the clouds, the angle of the air craft as well as the bird. Those three in my opinion is what makes it an excellent picture.

OK, I'll bite. Where were you for the Vulcan pic? My guess would be Brean Down, but I'm suspicious of the angle.

I took a relative to watch the last flight past W-s-Mud; he was delighted since he was an apprentice at Filton in the 60s. Watching a heavy bomber stand on a wingtip ought to be impossible, but we saw it that day.

OK then, now why were you suspicious of the angle?

I was in fact perched very dangerously close to the edge of a cliff where there was warnings about to close to the edge, worried about taking such a shot with my camera  and panning to capture the once in a lifetime shot, while I could not see what was happening to cliff edge.

The location was in fact Beechy Head near Eastbourne and was one of the last displays for the Vulcan. I did see it a few more times before it finally retired, at Southend where it overflew the static Vulcan there, and at North Weald Airfield and twice at Shuttleworth which included the last ever public display for her.

I personally think its a real shame and a national disgrace that such a historic aircraft could not be kept flying.

Brean Down isn't that high, and the geometry of the bay.

The location was in fact Beechy Head near Eastbourne and was one of the last displays for the Vulcan.

Which is higher than Brean Down, and steeper, and is convex rather than being a concave bay.

In the end, I never got to see it fly, except high above the crowds at Shoreham after the Hunter crash. It was due to fly past at Old Sarum a few weeks later but scratched due to a fuel leak, I think.

They're really good resistors. 50ppm tempco 1% 600mW.

I'm going to build an HF dummy load (6/12W undecided) with mine when they turn up. Need to work out a fun topology where they won't desolder themselves first

What I don't understand, is how come I couldn't get these resistors to appear on the RS site at all until you gave me the link?

They didn't appear in the search or parametric search, only if you typed the part number in. So if you hit LR1F100R (I was actually after this particular resistor) then they show up.

I'm checking the site again and there are loads of these resistors all at the same price, they are listing 11 values;

10R, 100R, 330R, 470R, 2.2K, 2.7K, 3.3K, 15K, 20K, 22K and 1M, all at the same price we paid.
