So I tried to power up the 585A with the time delay relay tube removed, and it popped the fuse after almost starting. Gotta delve into the 100V rail now, as that is always on whether or not the time delay has tripped or not.

I haven't looked at the 585A schematic but if the 100V rail is always on it sounds like it's the reference for all the other supply voltages, correct? Try to isolate it from all the other supplies to see if it stays up by itself. If yes then you have to determine which supply is drawing excess current when it's sequenced up.

-150 is the reference supply according to the manual. I maybe found a dead shorted cap in the heater supply though...C786, a filter cap. + to ground is less than 1 ohm which I'm preeetty sure should not be the case for a cap! [edit] this is wrong...I keep getting screwed up by how the heaters are wired. I need to lift one leg to confirm.

Am I showing my age...?   ;D

Yes, you are skipping K6, K7 and K8.

NOW who's showing their age?   ;)

K-9...?

If anyone was going to be first with that one, I'd have put money on it being you....

But I doubt anyone here would have taken that bet.

Those two are the 'normal' market attendees the K9 is of course departed a few years ago. There is also another K8 in the Shack and two other full sized commercial grinders. I don't have a problem really  :-DD

That brings back memories of one of the 2 green HV caps dying and effectively doubling the HV, the 1u cap in the sound chain going bad, the sticky on/off switch that got a recall, the tuners not really up to lightning and the blown BU's (this was my first encounter with a SMPS).

I’ve probably said this before, but I always admired Philips’ ability to produce every part for their products in house.

That way you're in control of quality and quantity. It was exactly the same at Crabtree Electrical when I worked there, even made their own springs and screws etc in house.

I've been encouraged and prodded by this group several times to get one of those but I don't like the LCD display. Gotta be ruby red LED's or I'm not playing.  :-DD

So, of my extensive TE collection the only HP is one lonely power supply.  :-//

Speaking of which... I have a PM6654 here (1.5Ghz option), which unfortunately is bad. Would you be interested in a repair attempt? Shipping back and forth is on me. If you can repair it, you've had fun and I have a sellable meter. If not, eh, well...

edit.  have a boatload of hp dot led displays (w/the bcd decoders on the chip)......maybe that would not be quite the abomination?

My suggestion - replace all this by a super cool modern OLED display showing nixie tubes. :)

Re the 'new' 3478 ,I appreciate the removal of any LCD - the only electronic display that I dislike with a vengeance (except on a 41C calculator), I propose replacing the display with some good LEDs, they are not too far from the vintage of the button design etc. Nixies need an entirely different front panel.

PS one of my 5245L is going to a new home on the weekend! A period of mourning, hopefully off to be looked after well.
Whoah! Watch where that landed we might need it later.

It would appear that someone is not telling the truth.  :-// ;D

Yes, but I'm not worried. All three need to be calibrated but before doing that,
the Fluke 732A needs a new battery pack. The one inside is dead as a dodo.
I'm thinking about replacing it with a Li-Ion pack (the original ones are Pb-acid).
The advantages would be:
- less weight
- increased capacity. The Pb-acid batteries are good for 2 days uptime, with the Li-Ion a week could be easily achieved

Disadvantages are:
- needs a different charger, therefore a modification of the PSU of the 732A. Maybe not a so good idea.
- sending in to a cal-lab would be problematic because of the restrictions of the delivery service companies.

I hoped, I could discuss this topic at the Metrology Meeting in Stuttgart, but this meeting got canceled for well-known reasons.

Was not aware  for the metrology meeting, that something I definitively  need to attend next time it will found place.

BTW I replaced the battery from my 731A with new LiOn one and he now back in business :D
