Agilent DSO7014A upgrade to MSO7054A
« on: April 10, 2017, 08:40:11 am »
After some HW mods I have managed to upgrade my DSO7014A.
It does 4Gsa/s now
Scope is calibrated with the User Cal procedure after the mods, which is needed to set the trigger point correctly

More pictures of the rise times
Generator is a Tektronix 284 with 70ps rise time

Trigger point change.
The horrible wave forms are due to the fact that all 4 channels were in parallel connected to the Tek 284

Nice!
Has there been a discussion here somewhere about the resistor mod for increasing sample rate (FPGA resistor mod 1K 0603), I must have missed that?

Well I saw a message from Mike that he tried to do this on a DSO7012A. But since this failed on his system other people concluded that a 100MHz 7000A series could not be modified......

Update : Mike his scope was a DSO6012A... Anyhow there seems to be a difference in the functions of the FPGA resistors on a DSO6014A and DSO7014A.

Is it as simple as bypassing the input filters and setting the proper id resistors and running user-cal?
So no code hacking/flashing/bashing?

In principle yes, however you can enable all options with a patched firmware version to liberate all options, see also

I did some rework, and removed the SMD coils and wire straps from the board. The waveform and rise times are not affected.

Original values of the removed components are:

C = 10pF
L = 200nH

ps. If you take of the aluminum shielding from the attenuators the small clips may break and leave a tiny metal particle on the PCB.

Nice work on the upgrade!

I am about to try this on my newly acquired MSO7014B, and I was thinking it could be an idea to figure out what component values are actually used in the 7054, and use these!? My thinking is that since these components form a low pass filter, leaving them out could potentially lead to some aliasing problems. Or would this not be a problem?

Any thoughts on this?

Have you run into any other issues as a consequence of this upgrade?

A good starting point for values would be to look at the 500 MHz mod for the 3000A series of scopes which has been posted here. The design is very similar. And I do believe a proper mod would not just short out the original parts. There should still be a capacitor/inductor lowpass filter.
