Tektronix TDS1000B series color LCD upgrade
« on: January 26, 2022, 07:28:19 pm »
I'm in the process of modifying my TDS1012B panel to use LEDs instead of the near dead CFL backlighting when I realized it may be possible to convert it to a color LCD. There's another model, the TDS1012C, with identical specs except for a color LCD instead of a Black and White one:

It got me thinking it might be possible to swap out my LCD in mine for a color one. The TDS1012B LCD manufacturer part number is LTBHBTD84H10CK made by Nanya. I am not sure who makes the color one, but the Tektronix part number is 850-0115–70.

According to the thread, there's a firmware setting for operating in color or black and white. It flags an error if the hardware doesn't support it, which might pose an obstacle. It's unclear how it detects the differences. It could be a simple model number check, LCD test or onboard color circuitry check. There's a poster on the thread who claimed a successfully color conversion, but didn't provide details when asked.

Has anyone tried or have know if it's even possible?

If I remember correctly

The TDS1kB display uses a different cable to connect (the connector on the main board side is larger), and it also connects directly to the PSU for its backlight power (the HV inverter for the fluorescent bulb is on the PSU).

The TDS1kC display connects straight to the main board (I believe the newer displays use LEDs so no need for HV inverter) for its backlight power and the main board connector is smaller.

I don't know if it's a simple pin-to-pin for the display connection, but the power connection should be simple enough. As far as the FW goes, I couldn't tell you.

Thanks. Schucks!  I have the old CCFL version.  I will convert it to LED anyway. As it was once said, "Keep scope alive!"
