I've been burned on platform specific app based hardware myself. It's ridiculous that there's no way to obtain IOS apps that no longer exist in the App Store - even if you could find a phone with the correct hardware for an earlier IOS version. Android has it's own issues, but at least you can occasionally find an apk file to sideload. But odds are if the company is gone and you cannot locate the app then yes, it's now a brick.
Speaking of which, looking up to see what this device is I did encounter a few notes claiming the developer was working on an Android version at one point - not sure if they are still in business, but I'd try to contact them or any of the suppliers.
