Siglent spam warning!
« on: January 08, 2015, 10:37:11 pm »
*edited*

I have decided to retract my original post as I have come to realize it is entirely possible that Siglent aren't at fault and I may have been mistaken here due to an unfortunate coincidence. As such I don't want to cause them any undue grief.

Thanks to all who posted their thoughts on the matter.

So I recently got one of their scopes and wanted to download all I could from their site. To do this I had to sign up. Ever since doing so the amount of spam I get has massively increased. I used to get about 3-4 a month, suddenly I'm getting 5 or more a day! I do not think this is coincidence. They must be selling email addresses to interested parties and from a 'professional' company that sits really badly with me.

Shame on you siglent! There is no way in hell these will ever stop now.

Hardly worth it. Now my email address has been supplied to all and sundry I can't imagine any of them will bother removing it from their list.

I'm not a Siglent customer, but I can't understand why any company in 2015 would require login information to see a datasheet or user manual.  :palm:  :--

If I go to

http://www.siglent.com/ENs/down.aspx

and click on any download button, it says

"You are not logged in.  Please login"

I thought Siglent would want their information easily accessible to potential customers?

If you click on Register, there is a checkbox already filled in (opted in by default) to get all the Siglent emails, promos, etc.  It shoud be unchecked (opted out by default).

And yes, Dave ranted about this 5 years ago

http://www.eevblog.com/2009/12/01/eevblog-47-recruitment-consultants-suck-and-engineering-evil/

"100% pure rant time.
Dave cuts lose on recruitment consultants, local component suppliers, and companies that make you register to get datasheets."

Post away all EEVbloggers, if there is a problem with spam mail then Siglent does need to know.
Never had any problems myself, the only unsolicited emails from Siglent I receive are product release announcements and special offers.
But different ISP's have better spam filtering than others.  :-//
Maybe that why I have no problems.

The only way it can be addressed is with as much feedback as possible.
Thanks in advance.

I get 5 or more a day only from Texas Instruments. Sometimes at 3AM, during the day, when I forgot to turn off the sound on my phone...

It's not just Siglent. Tektronix is actually even worse. Several days ago I downloaded the manual for a Tek scope, which requires being registered with Tek (which I am). Before the download starts a popup comes up with a checkbox asking if I wanted to be contacted by a Tek representative. Of course I didn't so I left the box unchecked.

Low and behold I got a call yesterday which was captured by my voicemail. It was a Tek representative noticing that I had downloaded a manual just wanting to ask if I need anything. And they're wondering why they get barely any business these days.

On the other side is Agilent/Keysight, not perfect but still much better as if you want you can still register an account there, but manuals and stuff can also be downloaded without an account (they just ask for some name and some email before the download - doesn't even have to be your name and email).

Yeah, but he's suggesting actual spammers got his address, not that Siglent themselves are sending them. Surely you can tell TI to piss off.

Correct. All of the usual crap that tries to sell you something or send you to somewhere to catch a virus.

Should be easy to find out if it is indeed Siglent that leaks the email addresses. Someone just needs to setup an unique email address that is only used for registering with Siglent, and then see if the spam amount has increased.

Thanks for your reply Siglent. I did use www.siglent.com/ens . I guess the host location would explain why anything over a few MB cannot be downloaded without it aborting.

I apologize if I jumped the gun but I have not done anything else in the given time frame that could lead to this.

I thought I would set up a hotmail account to register with and see if that also got spam but it looks like hotmail is blocked in china (verification code can't be sent).

I'll trust what you say is true and think maybe hackers obtained your user database, there's enough of that activity going on right now.

I don't think your additional SPAM is due to Siglent.  I signed up and asked for the information, and I've seen no increase in SPAM at all.  I do get some SPAM, but I've been getting some of it for ages.  I have quite a few e-mail addresses, and the one that Siglent have has shown NO SPAM.  I suspect that this is an unfortunate coincidence.

If you want to capture the North American market, the website name

http://www.siglentamerica.com/

is not intuitive.  Most people including myself just thought it was

http://www.siglent.com/

You should be able to deduce from my IP address that I reside in Canada and thus redirect me automatically to an English site.

Amazon, Mouser, etc have been doing this automatically for a long time now.

Asking me to remember www.siglentamerica.com isn't going to happen.

I have two account in Siglent (two because first I think first was failed (due to high lag over great wall and due to long distance also IP packet delay and fragmenting is high. ), but later found it also works)

I have not get any extra "spam" mail related to Siglent

This other account was registered with new virgin email (gmail) account and this time not used for any other purpose and not get any extra "spam".

To my normally (and carefully)  used "official" email I get some times nearly 100 spam mails every day.  But they do not pop up to my eyes because spam filters are working (and I really do not open any emal what I do not regognize "known" and never ever go to "unsubscribe" link. Only mark that all emails from this address are spam)

When register over http web to some place, if it is Siglent or what ever where need some registration it is like you send all these information as open post card where is your address or other information.  (they do not use even https for registry page)

Rigol want also your data before you can load example User Manual etc..  and also just in open as post card "look all what I write"  http page.

-----

Btw: I do not remeber "siglentamerica" or "siglenteu".  Why I need remember these. My web browser remember it in my links.

Personally I hate this "redirecting" what many business use.
It was long time ago HP (Agilent / Keyshit) do it.  It try turn me always to HP Finland side.  But also in this case, solution was I store HP Usa link and allways need some manuals it was without this redirection hassle. I want be "boss" where I go with my computer. I do not want some hidden system select where I'm going.  This same problem was also some times with eBay.  I want my self make decision what side exatly I go. Perhaps it is better to start using Tails to stay away from these data collectors.

BEV of course. Cars with smoke exhaust pipes - go to museum. In Finland quite all electric power is made using nuclear, wind, solar and water.

You should be really careful in bashing a company in your thread title if you are not 100% sure they are to blame.  In this case, they are very likely not to blame.

I have seen a HUGE rise in spam over the past week or two, from 10 a day to 10-20 per hour.  It's not that someone gave out my email, it's just that some new spammer will start up and send out a massive quantity of junk mail for a few days before they get caught and shut down or before they make it onto various blacklists and their mail gets filtered out.
It's not always the most popular person who gets the job done.

As you already received spam, that means that your email address was already in spammer databases.
