Why would you want to Telnet into the scope when you have a perfectly good SCPI command page in the web browser. I don't get it.

Why not? You use your web interface, baldurn uses his terminal. What's the point here?
Web is so so simple...... and you need configure I/O anyways if you need a NTP time sync.

Remember, I have had SDS814X HD for nearly 4 weeks and know it reasonably well by now.  ;)

Did you use the bundled probe to measure the bandwidth?

No it came with 70 MHz probes. I used a direct coax cable between signal generator and the scope instead.

Since you can trivially upgrade the bandwidth, the real value in buying the larger models lies in the bundled probes.

Newest versions ?
Ziplock bag and compensation trimmers now in the BNC termination ?

I am guessing that you are a Windows user?

I am running Linux and had the python script in my terminal. The better question is why would I not run a telnet command? It is a terminal operation and there are zero advantages to take that to the browser. I am obviously using the browser for the things that are better done there, such as taking screenshots etc.

The probe is PB470, 70MHz, the bag has a ziplock and there are trimmers on the BNC connector.

Yep W10 but the OS don't matter if you use a browser, any browser can access the inbuilt webserver and like I said, if you need file timestamps you need setup the NTP IP and I/O with the scopes IP address.
Once that's done there is zero need for Telnet.

There is zero need to switch context? I ran the commands:

nvim keygen.py
python3 keygen.py
telnet 192.168.8.117 5024

All in the same terminal. Why would I bother to switch to a browser for the last step?

I am a developer and a system administrator. I work my whole day in a terminal. I suspect the last part is what may be hard to get :-)

As for setting up the IP address, that happens by DHCP and has to be done before you can access the scope from either terminal or browser. I am having a hard time seeing what your point is there?

But since we are in a thread about this scope, I will come with some critique: the scope came with static IP selected and some random IP entered into the fields. It should have come with DHCP enabled instead. Also you have to enter an IP address for NTP. Instead it should just use pool.ntp.org and do that automatically. Finally even though I configured my timezone it is still wrong by 1 hour. It apparently does not know how to do daylight saving compensation.

You might be okay however others might brick the scope.  :scared:

With the webserver and the SCPI command page there is no such risk....

That is probably untrue. There is no additional safety in using the SCPI command tab in the web interface. If you can enter harmful SCPI commands via telnet you can also enter the same SCPI commands through the web SCPI interface.

And why would it?

DST is not universal.  Here in Canada we have had 3 different policies.   Saskatchewan and the Yukon do not do it, Newfoundland used to do 2 hours but are now back to one like the rest of the country.

Most countries near the equator don't bother and countries south of the equator that do it, do it opposite.

4 ch., 12 bits and 265MHz for $439!! :scared:

This is insane!

Of course, it is lacking the confusing bubblegum and crayon UI of the Rigol.  :-DD :-DD

Select auto DHCP and give it a few secs.  ;)

Because it is annoying to have it show the wrong time. If you are not going to bother using the correct time, why bother at all? It is easy, the thing is running Linux and all my Linux machines know how to do it. It even has the option for me to select the exact city I am located in and therefore it is using the databases of timezones and DST policies that has this information. Yes this stuff changes, which is why there is a public database it can download automatically for updates.

Yeah, but you can also enter a lot of other commands when you telnet in.

No there are no other commands that you can enter by telnetting to that port. We are not telnetting to a bash terminal or anything such. Instead we are connecting to the SCPI port, which is strictly not telnet. We are just abusing that the SCPI protocol is so simple, that telnet also works. Nevertheless the only things you can send to that port are SCPI commands.

The real MVP of this release is the 2104X-HD though. It's € 1748.40 at batterfly.com.

Very true. I have been eyeing 2104X-HD for the last 6 or so months since I sold my Rigol. I have had to put a few of my projects on hold. I am so glad I waited for this release. In the US 2104X-HD dropped to $1999 from $2625. Instantly grabbed it.

You won't regret it, an excellent scope, even for the money I once paid for it (3600€)... :P ;)
You don't know if this super low price is now the standard for the 2000X HD or a sale - either way, just go for it, it can't get any better.

And now for the thing everyone wants: I upgraded the scope from 70 MHz to 200 MHz bandwidth. Used the script in the first post here: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/siglent-sds-sdg-hack-script/

Looks like this:

Code: [Select]
baldur@yakshi:~$ telnet 192.168.8.117 5024
Trying 192.168.8.117...
Connected to 192.168.8.117.
Escape character is '^]'.
Welcome to the SCPI instrument 'Siglent SDS804X HD'

baldur@yakshi:~$ telnet 192.168.8.117 5024
Trying 192.168.8.117...
Connected to 192.168.8.117.
Escape character is '^]'.
Welcome to the SCPI instrument 'Siglent SDS824X HD'

And now we have instrument model SDS824X HD on the screen.

I measured the 3 dB bandwidth to be 113 MHz before the upgrade and 286 MHz after entering the codes. Everything seems to be fine including 100Mpts. Did not even reboot.
:-//

Why not?  I even use windows terminal with vintage terminal mode to see the scanlines.

I did yesterday! Got it with the bundle. The bundle deal is cheaper than buying the SPL2016 by itself. I'm very excited to finally use a professional level scope!

I also ordered the 2104X-HD with the bundle. I have been looking for about 6 months, and following all of the updates on the newly released scopes. I was originally planning on a SDS1104X-HD, but with the price drop on the 2104X HD, I decided it was worth it to spend a bit more for a higher quality scope. An additional benefit, it will match the color of  my other Siglent equipment.

Also you have to enter an IP address for NTP. Instead it should just use pool.ntp.org and do that automatically

OR it should respect whatever NTP address the dhcp provides. But nobody seems to get my point about this... :-(

Using pool.ntp.org is considered bad practice i think. They (ntp.org) want companies to register, have a dedicated subdomain, and use this in their gears. That doesn't seem difficult though, doesn't cost money, and your point stay valid, of course.

I kinda remember a recent post where the same commands would not work through web/scpi, but worked wonder with telnet/scpi. Something about calibration i guess, probably with siglent electronic loads.

I'm a linux user as well, and i would 100% probably have gone the telnet way, even without this warning post  :-+

As usual, the new scopes are not available in Australia yet. Appvision do not even have a target date. Where's the best option to order a SDS804X delivered internationally?

Same here in Canada.  According to my "local" dealer, Siglent NA are more interested in the US market right now so shipments to Canada will be delayed until supply improves.
