Second hand Rigol DS1052E
« on: March 27, 2015, 01:16:59 pm »
Hi, got my hands on a DS1052E - The guy wants 200€/220 USD, is this a reasonable price? It does include all original stuff, that may be probes i guess. Is there other things included from new?

Thanks.

It's a reasonable price. I sold my unit for 200€ before ordering the DS1054Z.

I personally wouldn't bother to pay 200 € for a scope with such a crap small screen.

You make it sound like it is unusable. Far from it. It is a very good scope for a beginner.
People pay thousands of dollars for portable scopes with far worse screens than that.
200$ seems to be the going rate at the moment and it is a bargain if the scope is fully functional.

Sold mine last december for Eur 235. It was in like new condition, all the parts,
upgraded to 100MHz en very nicely silenced (high qual fan). It is still a nice DSO and
very usefull for a beginner, a good learning tool too. Screen font is very readable, better than the new scopes.
I would certainly not pay more than Eur 200 for a standard version.

Watch out for defects (10x switch) on the probes, and they are complete (tips, hooks, springs).
Look at the feet, do they still lock in place?
A Rigol CD should be included and a power cord.

Well, no. I'm not saying it's a bad scope, they're good scopes. Their screens are simply rock bottom, especially by today's standards, (yeah, okay, the only thing worse would be black and white instead of a color screen) and else they're good. I think that this information should be mentioned for a qualified assessment of how much someone wants to pay for something.

(And, as I have said before many times ; it doesn't really matter what other people are willing to pay for some piece of second hand gear, or if other people paid way over top for some piece of gear. That's like searching on eBay and taking "buy it now" prices for real...)

A brand new one is only 239€, I'd offer him 170€ if it's in really good condition.

eg.  http://www.batronix.com/shop/oscilloscopes/Rigol-DS1052E.html

OTOH if you already have 200€ you could save up a bit longer for a DS1054Z. It's a much, much better 'scope. You won't regret making the effort.

You would have to add VAT to that price if you are in Europe.
Prices will be going up in April to adjust for currency exchange rates.

Oh, OK.

Still ... it's something that's going to last a long time so it's worth making the extra effort to get a DS1054Z if you intend to use it regularly. In the long term I think you'd regret buying a DS1052E.

(If it's just for occasional use OTOH, go for it. The DS1052E is still a useful instrument...)

I know that the DS1054Z is a much better buy - The reasons for going digital is weight/volume, robustness, and singleshot/record-features.. I'm using it primarily for automotive use, ie. slow signals.. But bumping around with the CRT isn't that great i think.

I don't think my analog is that good for non-repetetive signals, the waveform is jumping all over the screen, it is impossible (for me at least) to adjust correct. Have a look at this thread, where i'm asking the question about a bouncing waveform; https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/noise-question/

I use the scope 5-10 times a year, so really not something i want to spend a fortune on.

EDIT:
The DS1054Z is like 299€ from Batronix.com - I've got a VAT number.. With 239€ for the DS1052E, brand new. The used one should be cheaper. Maybe i'll bid him 150€ MAX.. Considering the new scopes are with warranty and all. This used DS1052E can be 5 years old..
I think i'm going for a brand new 1054Z, if he won't accept my bid.

I really didn't know the new ones were SO cheap.. Thanks for the pointers!

If you sell your Tek 2246 to counter-finance the Rigol you should get a good deal for it. They usually sell somewhere between 100-200 $ (sometimes more) on eBay.

One piece of 1054Z is in order now from Batronix - I just don't like that long delivery window.  ??? ::)

Well, hope i'll be glad for the decision. Thanks for pointing me away from the relative expensive used one :-+ Usually I allways check that kind of things, but it was not on my mind, that new scopes were so dirt cheap.
