Scored another FREE Scope!
« on: November 07, 2013, 04:32:16 pm »
I just picked up a cache of test equipment from an individual which was going to scrap them out. I got the whole cache for free! Scope, Function Generator, Power Supply and more. I scored this Tektronix 2235A 100MHz which besides a few noisy switches (easily taken care of) works great! And in awesome shape! Set of Tek probes, calibrated and they work fine! I love it!!!

I've just paid real money for two non-working Tek 2235s. No idea what the faults are yet but they are good scopes when working.

I burned the scope for about 24 hours with a test signal. Was solid over that time. I will add some pics of the other gear. I have a lead on some more gear, I may start offering up some to the EEVBlog members.

If you do offer some of it for sale I'm looking for a 2MHz+ function generator.

Lucky bastard.... Lol

I have my eye on a 20 MHz Tenma scope on local Kijiji, I'm just undecided if I should get it or wait until I can find a 100 MHz or so model cheap enough.

Congrats.

Some people DO have all the luck!  The last free gift I got, were 2 tube scopes(can't remember names).  When I plugged them in, but shot sparks and some small flame.  Unplugging them put them out, but the wife was annoyed as the smell hung around the house for a couple of days. :(

Apart from intense jealousy, the second feeling this gives me is mystification. What kind of person even contemplates just throwing stuff like that away as scrap? How did a person with such attitudes come to have nice test gear in the first place? How do they even remember to breathe?

Also, why don't I know any such strange people, that a) have nice gear, and b) want to get rid of it for free?

Life is tragic.

KJDS, she absolutely supports my hobbies, both ham radio and electronics.  She was annoyed at the smell.  To tell the truth, so was I.  It got old to me after the first day also ;D.  Like everyone else, I love the smell of hot rosin core solder in the morning, but I prefer the smell or burned electronics to be gone by night :-DD.

TerraHertz, the most upsetting and sad thing about this is the guy who gave these to me had no clue what they were. The statement made to me was "I have no idea what this stuff is"!!!! I was in shocked and giddy at the same time...

Just say yeah that old stuff there nobody wants it. I'll be lucky to make up my gas money selling it for scrap metal after spending hours and hours pulling all the useless insides out and paying for them to be disposed in an environmentally friendly way.

Now you've just gone and made the mystery worse. Did you find out *how* he came to have those things without knowing anything about them?

You're right, it's really disturbing to think about.

No mystery, the guy was in charge of the area, these items were sitting in a corner taking up room and nobody claimed them so he made the executive decision to shit-can them. I happened to be on the receiving end of that deal. Another item I received was a 5MHz BK Precision Function Generator, did not power up, found the transformer to be bad so I replaced it with one I had that closely matched and as Dave says "Bob's your uncle!", it works!

If you have excess stock find a box and fill it and post it my way, or to Dave.

I did think about a giveaway, but international shipping on something like that would be expensive!
