The best way to sort that is to change the wife :)

I explained to my wife early on something like "look, these are my hobbies.  one can't be a healthy individual without a hobby and these are mine.  my hobbies come as a package with me.  sometimes they'll make me mad, sometimes they'll make me happy, and you're gonna need to ride that train with me.  when I show you something I made, and you don't get it, just say it's cool and how impressed you are, and I'll do the same for you."

It's worked out pretty well, but her desire to control every last thing that goes on in the house comes up now and again.  I love her dearly, and I've certainly screwed up in major ways many times, but she's still here, more awesome than ever, and she's tolerant of my hobbies.

My point is that changing wives should be a last resort.  I know you were joking, but I just wanted to give my $0.02.

No doubt I was kidding. My wife whom I love dearly has been very tolerant of my hobbies and profession even though it has imposed on our home quite extensively. With my new lab, parts storage areas and general pile of stuff I don't want to throw away yet, she has been wonderful with her acceptance of it. I was merely saying that we should try to persuade them into understanding why we do these things so they can relate a little more. Not always an easy task though. And many times she does not take any interest whatsoever in electronics, so when I get excited about a new meter or scope, she thinks it's cute!

I am lucky to have such a tolerant wife, and seems you do too!
