Multimeter usb adapter product idea
« on: November 06, 2019, 01:55:47 pm »
A little while ago I was was playing around with my DMM (Voltcraft VC850) and realized that the IR mode just sends out 2400 baud serial data and built a little board to fit the slot for the adapter cable, with a little USB-serial converter on it. Now a friend told me that it might be a good idea to sell it, as I could sell it cheaper than the original USB adapter cable (~15€ vs 30€)* and, unlike than the cable, it could stay in the slot until needed.
Now my question is: would anybody actually want something like this? As a student I would like to not waste a few hundred € on a product that no one would buy. It should be compatible with all of the instruments that the original cable is compatible with, plus i THINK (no guarantee) the UNI-T ones as they use the same molding (i don't know who voltrcraft re brands their meters from) and would cost around 15€ (+ maybe 2€ shipping). I would probably sell via ebay.
One thing that would be annoying is that you might have to change the default serial port for the cable as the software can only use COM1-4.

Just to be sure: I'm not trying to advertise this and am not part of any company (though I do have a pretend logo and website, a bit weird i know  :-// ). I just wan't honest opinions  :)

The pictures show the version that i made a while ago, the plastic part is 3d printed

* Note: i just found knockoff UNI T cables on banggood for 10€ and eBay for 16€, so compared to those the only way mine would be better is that it could stay in the meter and not get lost after not using it for a while.

Also i am not quite sure in which topic this question fits so sorry if this is the wrong one.

Its a good idea. Some meters have implemented this, the AMPX1 for example that was recently famous: https://www.amazon.ca/Professional-High-Accuracy-Multifuction-Calibrator/dp/B01K1GG6XW

Is this the UNI-T cable you refer to: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32434579468.html ?
If so your version is better as it can be left in the meter as you say.

I would build a few, list here/ebay/tindie and see if there is any interest and go from there. For a future board revision you may consider trying a USB C connector.

Jep that's one of those cables.

I have actually considered using usb C in the first place, but at least in my lab all of the usb enabled tools use b/mini b/micro b so i have quite a few of these cables around and only one usb C for my phone.
I might make two versions of it though.

So once i can scrape together enough money to make >10 I'll put them up on ebay :D
