New Rohde & Schwarz Vector Signal Generator SMCV100B
« on: July 23, 2020, 05:20:28 pm »
Ive just seen that Rohde & Schwarz announced their new entry level Vector Signal Generator.

4 kHz to 7.125 GHz
Compact and with a touchscreeen.

It seems that there is just one base model that can be extended with software options.

https://www.rohde-schwarz.com/lv/product/smcv100b-productstartpage_63493-773184.html#m/ao7:0:1

Especially the price for the 3 GHz Unit is impressive (1000€) and competitive towards Rigol and Siglent. But it looks like even the cheapest software option costs more than the base unit :o

Here are some prices:

It does at first glance look good but as you say the options costs are typically Tektronix

Seeking quality measurement equipment at realistic cost with proper service backup. If you pay peanuts you employ monkeys.

I have a feeling that datatec.de has made an error regarding the price of the base SMCV100B, the following store for example lists the base unit at € 6630,- https://www.mbelectronique.fr/smcv100b-3ghz--generateur-de-signaux--mbe. This would be more in line with the price of the analog SMC100A which starts at about 5k.

Just for curiosity's sake (in case they will really deliver), I ordered a unit at datatec for 1000 EUR. That would be less than what virtually any other budgetary instrument in this class, even second hand, would cost. Actually, I expect to receive an email one of the next days explaining that they made a mistake with the quoted price for the instrument and they will make a "special offer" some five times of the original tag...which I will sadly decline  :P. Should I really end up with the instrument, this must be a once-in-a-lifetime bargain  8).

Haha yes I have noted the same price difference - that must surely be a mistake especially if you look at the previous SMC100A that costs around 6000EUR for the base instrument.

Another link here for a much high entrance fee: https://www.distrame.fr/fr/catalog/Generateur-de-signal-vectoriel-SMCV100B-4-kHz-a-3-GHz-SMCVB-B103,907985.html

Hello,

in the link "https://www.datatec.de/SMCV100B" at bottom:

"

"

does this mean you must buy the Option 3 GHz: Rohde&Schwarz SMCVB-B103 in addition?

best regards
egonotto

Had been out on a business trip and only now got in touch with datatec after they tried to reach me.

I'm sure it caused them quite some headache to find a way to turn the thing so they don't have to sell me the base version for 1000EUR plus VAT. The "Options" for the base version weren't listed on their page at the time I placed my order. In general, it doesn't make any sense to sell a "base model" at all if a "base model option" also needs to be purchased.

Anyway, I never expected to actually receive the instrument, this way the order will be cancelled and the pre-payment returned. Datatec is a reputable company and they value customer service, otherwise I wouldn't have tried this "experimental" purchase with them right from the start...

At least the friendly lady I talked to at the phone admitted that the online offer was a little ambiguous and that they added the "clarification" after my order and apologized for the mis-information.

So I guess I've got to stay with my DIY repaired, second hand, slightly out of calibration SM300 "better then nothing" RF generator  ;)
