R&S Codenames
« on: August 30, 2019, 07:28:26 pm »
I was poking around some of the XML files on my Rohde & Schwarz RTO oscilloscope and I found a list of frontend components / attributes with some interesting entries.

Does anyone know what Kuma, Ooma, and Majuro are? Codenames for ASICs? German words that Google Translate doesn't want to tell me about?

It could be ASIC or FPGA design names. The Commodore Amiga also had these funny names for the ASICs. Though that was in the era when computers came with complete schematics in the manual.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Yep, sure enough, OOMA was the ADC:

Any leads on Kuma or Majuro?

Majuro2 is a Variable Gain Amplifier (VGA), and is used in the analog front-end of the RTM2000 oscilloscopes

From what I can tell by looking at firmware it looks like Majuro and Kuma are different "Front End Controllers." They could be sub-components of the controller too, but I see them being associated with the Front End Controlller.

That could be. The RTO1024 VGA is on a hybrid labeled "ONOTOA v3.0" but that might refer to the hybrid itself.
