I couldn't help myself... I saw this on Ebay... didn't have a clue what it was... but I wanted it.

I've posted images to imgur: http://imgur.com/a/UGxb3

Does anybody know anything about this device? The Internets know nothing about it.

It appears to have a bipolar HV supply (I'm guessing +/- 1-2KV based on the 10 series 450V capacitors)

It has two tubes - I'm assuming a push and a pull tube? I know nothing about tubes I'm afraid.

The two connectors on the back labeled remote seem to control it - it looks like they go to opto isolators on the front board.

Any idea of the vintage? It's nearly spotless so it doesn't look old - but the West German capacitors make me think otherwise.

My guess on the date is 1984, based on the serial number, and that a lot of components have what I'm assuming to be date codes "82" and "83."

As for what its for, the "spectrometer output" on the back is a clue. Perhaps a power supply for a mass spectrometer?

Here is such an amplifier as part of a complete instrument -- an electron spectrometer:

Googling for the model number "865 975" finds also this document: "Operating Instructions for
Leybold EA11-MCD XPS Chamber" where it lists a Multiplier supply (865976) and a HV amplifier bipolar (865978)

Fascinating.

Thanks guys - that's super interesting to see a sort of manual and the full suite of devices!

If this thing is some sort of amplifier/power supply - any estimates on power output? I do not know tubes well enough to guess myself...

Not much. Maybe 10-30 W - a few mA worth of HV.

Agreed. And as the rated input (supply) power of this unit is only 35W, the HV output power will probably be on the low side of the range you gave.
