Common problems with Fluke 87-V speaker?
« on: July 13, 2011, 05:48:08 am »
My 87-V, that I got about a year ago, the continuity tone isn't working anymore - well, it so faint that I have to put the DMM up to my ear to even hear it.  It's there - just really, really faint.

Is this a common problem?  Dave mentioned something about it on the lastest 87-V GSM fix video about how the speaker mounts - and it got me thinking...

Is there a easy fix?  Or is it time to send it in?

(It's my only quality meter, so I'd rather not go without it for a few weeks.  My only choice is to buy a second one before I send it in - so I'm hesitant to do that)

I think that is time to replace the battery on it ..  ;)
Other than that, any DMM speaker can get some damage from accidental droppings.

Just for comparison, get another DMM and measure the volts on the beeper of the 87V when is active.
By this measurement we would able to compare and tell, if the problem is on the 87V circuitry, or just in the speaker.

The 9 volt is good, I replaced it just as good measure.  Still the same problem.

I didn't bother mentioning the voltage on the speaker.

Rats.

Maybe he doesn't have another meter capable of measuring a true RMS over the audio bandwidth or an oscilloscope so measuring the voltage across the speaker wouldn't give meaningful results?

It sounds like a loose connection is responsible for this.

That made me laugh - but thanks anyways!  There's no point in measuring it.  Regardless of the voltage I would measure - I still can't fix it - so there's no point.  If what ever is driving the speaker is bad, I can't fix it.  If the speaker is bad, I don't have the part to replace it.  It needs to be sent in.

Oh, and it's not a bad connection.  I could tell the springs on the speakers are making good contact with the PCB.

Thanks.

Fluke meters are tough, but the speakers aren't quite as tough as the rest.
I had to use my old Fluke 77 for a year without a beeper after I dropped the meter in a bucket of salt water.
Don't ask me how!! :-[
Washed the thing out with distilled water, then alcohol----no problem except the beeper.

Philips used to have a Fluke calibration/check service for $150,so when we sent it off for that, they replaced the speaker!
