recommendations for a scope for $300 or less,
« on: August 14, 2013, 01:35:07 pm »
I'm looking to purchase a scope, will hopefully have about $300 to spend after saturday.

100mhz ish bandwidth. bigger screen is better, (eyes arent what they used to be)

used is okay, so If anyone has anything they'd be interested in selling.. thats okay too..

I'm in the usa.. would prefer something from someone in the usa, for faster arrival after purchase. :)

Most barebones 100MHz class scopes are above $300. What you can do, though, is purchase something like the Hantek DSO5072P, and hack it up to 200MHz bandwidth. his scope goes for $270 on eBay, and has  free expedited shipping to the US. Otherwise, you might want to look for a cheap, digital, used Agilent/HP scope.

HP/Agilent: eBay auction: #http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-54520A-500-MHz-Digital-Oscilloscope-/161079223983?pt=BI_Oscilloscopes&hash=item258111e6af

You didn't say whether it needed to be digital or if it could be analog, that will of course influence the choices.

If analog is ok along with used, that definitely opens you up to many, many scopes to choose from including Tektronix on eBay.

You need to study eBay stuff carefully and then have a bit of luck, but as an example this would fit your budget (just barely if you have $25 left for shipping).

100MHz
4 channels
tons of features buried in this thing including frequency counter and volt meter

Wow. This is a nice scope! For pure bandwidth, though, you might want to consider the Tek 2465/7 series as well, but Damn, this is a terrific scope.

would prefer digital :)

just get the best Rigol you can afford

http://www.tequipment.net/RigolDS1102E.html?gclid=CIG6h--R_rgCFUui4AodzE0A-Q

$399 - 6% free shipping brand new, or maybe lower new prices somewhere, or maybe someone with one of these is looking to sell theirs to move up to a DS1000Z or DS2000 series

The OP wants digital but for the analog Tek fans out there how about this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tektronix-2467-Analog-Oscilloscope-350MHz-4-ch-with-user-manual-/151098069850?pt=BI_Oscilloscopes&hash=item232e25935a#ht_64wt_972

or this:

or this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TEKTRONIX-2467B-ANALOG-OSCILLOSCOPE-400MHz-4-CHANNEL-WORKING-CONDITION-/130964073582?pt=BI_Oscilloscopes&hash=item1e7e112c6e#ht_282wt_972

- there are bunches of them out there; just need to find one good one at a good price :)

Spending 300$ on a second-hand analogue scope doesn't make sense. There is usually no warranty and when something goes wrong, it will be expensive to repair, if parts are still available.
You would be far better off with a Rigol 1052E for about the same price and a three year warranty, even if not hacked to 100 MHz.

Unless you need > 100 MHz of bandwidth or to show fast glitches or some other feature that low-end digital and analog scopes won't offer, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

I'm kinda growing to like the dso5072 from hantek, it seems quite nice, big 7" screen, plus hackable to 200mhz.. and is within my price range.. $270 ish, that leaves some money for a adjustable power supply as well.. so I think I might go that route.
