Hissing crackling noise from my Siglent SDM3035
« on: March 08, 2024, 11:43:49 pm »
Hello Guys,

I just got my brand new SDM3055 delivered, I was so excited I set it up and hooked to my SIGLENT SPD3303X-E and started taking some DC voltage measurements.

I swear sometimes I hear a hissing, sometimes a crackling noise (like sparks) coming from the multimeter, mostly subdued by the fan noise. It is not consistent, happens occasionally.
Is it something I need to be worried about?

I am brand new to a bench multimeter, so do not know what to expect.

Thanks for your answer.

Sparking and/or hissing sounds spell RMA :)

If three 100  Ohm resistors are connected in parallel, and in series with a 200 Ohm resistor, how many resistors do you have?

How can be sure? The fan noise is overwhelming.

I have an SDM3055, and while the fan is loud, I've never heard ANYTHING besides the fan and relays clicking coming from the DMM.

If you confirm the noise is actually from the DMM, have it replaced.

Are you sure that what you're hearing isn't the relays clicking?

Check the fan for some foreign matter on/near the grille making intermittent contact with the blades.
Remove with tweezers if/as necessary.

I hear the relays clicking too, it is clear when I transition to a higher voltage input. Interestingly, the crackling noise is no longer frequent. The meter is just one day old. Let me keep it under observation or put a recording device next to it.

Try different power cable.
