Hi, I'm wondering about how AC power sources(Chroma, California instruments, etc) are wired. Are they suitable for use as isolation transformers? Provided you don't pass the ground to the EUT, of course.

Depends what you mean by "AC Power source". A variac for example does not provide isolation.

I mean those AC power sources manufactured by e.g. Chroma. They spit out whatever frequency and voltage you set it up to. Its basically a large switchmode converter.

I have a California Instruments Invertron and it is isolated, the unit is essentially a huge audio amplifier driving a power transformer for the output. I don't know about other similar devices but I would expect that they are.

The BK Precision, Omicron and Megger units I have all have isolated outputs.

Even if the output does not include transformer isolation, the line connected input side will.
