PCI Gpib cards
« on: November 14, 2015, 07:21:05 pm »
First I have never used gpib so you can flame me all you like, im wearing my cast iron asbestos covered undies tonight.

Will a NI pci card or a agilent pci card work with all Gpib kit. can you chain them like scsi kit on a single card and will either of those cards do that ?

Electrons are typically male, always looking for any hole to get into.

Make sure you can download the drivers for the card , if it's off *bay

Some of the NI cards are rather old, and getting the drivers can be troublesome.

I'd go for a NI card (for VISA support) if you have the $$ , but there's no prob. guarantee for  work with all Gpib kit.

I have a NI PCI card, but it's not even installed right now. As my 24/7 measurement server only have PCI-E

My current pref is USB-GPIB, and i have an Agilent (clone ??) , 2 Beiming's (like the Agilent) and a Prologix-Ether (sloooowww)

I suppose you mean : AGILENT 82350B  (make sure it's supported by the Agilent IO-lib) , and i see that linux-gpib work for that card

BTW:

This is my newest (yet untested) GPIB Toy.
I have to fire up under my Agilent E5810A LAN/GPIB Gateway
I was lucky to get one for 160€ and even delivered  :-+

Seems like they have one in UK here
http://www.ebay.com/itm/301778176043

That one combined with PythonVxi/IVI

Seems like a nice setup

I'd still go for an USB, prob an Agilent 82357B USB/GPIB Interface (even though it might be a clone)
But i see its almost 2 x the price of the PCI card.

But you can use it from a RasPi or a lappy or whatever.

Remember the cables aren't cheap , and stiff like he.. when bending.

if you get an HP or NI  GPIB card it will work fine. Install the drivers for the card and off you go.

Yes, you can stack multiple instruments on the card. The bus is very forgiving. Best is to daisy chain machines. from card to instrument 1, from instrument 1 to instrument 2 and so on. avoid 'forks'

You can have many machines on the bus. They guarantee 15 but i have gone well over that without problems, provided you use the short cables ( 1ft or 3 ft cable )
