Oscope with isolated inputs
« on: December 21, 2016, 02:44:55 am »
Hi folks, I'm new here to the forum, but I know I'm in the right place......(should have been here all along...lol)  Been watching Dave's videos when I get a chance, and learning whatever I can.  My question is regarding oscopes with isolated inputs, such as the Fluke 190 series, Tektronix THS3024, etc.  Are these battery powered type of scopes the only ones that truly have isolated inputs??  I use a Fluke 199C occasionally at work, along with some other Tek scopes.  That said, I did get a Rigol DS1102E earlier this year for home use (hobby stuff) and have liked it thus far.  However, I will say I wish I had a scope with isolated inputs in order to take different measurements without having to worry about grounding something.

I'm far from a scope expert, so I'm hoping some of you experts will jump in here with reasons/suggestions why I should go with a particular scope.  My preference thus far has been to stick with a portable scope, due to the obvious portability, and mostly the isolation of all channels.  The scopes I mentioned above are not cheap by any means, but I also wonder if getting a portable scope in that range that I might be losing out on a great bench scope in that same $$ range.  I would have thought there would have been more scopes with isolated inputs......maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, or too low of price range.....HELP!

Any and all feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks,
BlueRider

Yes, they're truly isolated, this example illustration from Tektronix handheld scope should give you a clear details ...

Yes there are HH DSO's with 2 isolated inputs but MOST only offer disconnection from mains ground (for 1 channel) and the input BNC's are commoned like the vast majority of benchtop scopes.

Eg. In the Siglent range we have both, the SHS1000 (isolated inputs) and SHS800 (commoned inputs).

Usually the cheapest solution for input isolation is Differential probes, something like a Pintek DP-25.

the isolated-input-scope i use is the tektronix tps2000.
4 chan + trigger
every channel is isolated (has its own ground connection)
operates on mains or battery
and it has a power analysis option

that's it. no decode, very tiny memory, very high cost.. well not so high compared to other scopes with 4 isolated ins. think like a tek tds but with isolated inputs.
