Tektronix (TDS5054B) - Error message GPIB
« on: April 22, 2020, 04:43:20 pm »
Anyone have any idea what might be the cause of a error on this scope - related to GBIP.

Something that's "fixable" or is it a major fault ?.

Yea, that's a tough one.   I doubt there is a lot of people with experience with this scope.  I recently bought two of the NAVY/MARINE ones and am kind of sorry I did.  There are much more of an Engineer's scope than a Tech's scope.  I feel they are difficult to operate.  I have adapted a utility program to use it instead of my TDS3000 series scopes.

Now to get to your problem.  I have no experience with repairing a GPIB problem, but my guess is you are going to have to tear it apart.  Getting in to the guts is NOT NEARLY AS EASY as the service documents show.  There is a learning curve and a lot of cursing to get that right (as you face the front of the scope) hand panel and top panel off.  The panel to take off is the one with DVD drive.  Once you can get inside the scope (let me know how much you cursed doing so), then you could look for items that may need re-seated.

I have one of mine apart right now to that stage to add a SSD drive to it.  I think I will give up on removing the old IDE drive - too hard.  I will probably velcro the 500GB Samsung SSD to the panel where the DVD drive mounts.  Anyhow, looking in to it, the GPIB connector has a cable that plugs in to the main board that is plugged in to the computer mother board.  If the GPIB part of the board is bad, you are going to be shit out luck.

What you may want to try is trying to re-install the Tektronix drivers.  Where can we get those?  I found one source on the WEB, but the disks are not in ISO format but a DD format that requires a Linux computer to burn the CD copies.  I see there is driver and restore disks on EBAY for $100 a set.  The seller has about ten sets.  I think I will order a set to have in archive.

Lets talk about these scopes.  I think they could be very a very powerful tool, but probably not for productive service as I wanted them for.  And the fricken things are HUGE and HEAVY.

If anyone can kindly provide ISO copies of the restore CDs for a TEK 5054 Scope, please do so and reply to this thread.

Thanks kindly,

Dave
