Oscilloscope with N-SINGLE trigger function
« on: May 03, 2022, 01:25:33 pm »
Hi everyone, I have a Yokogawa DL1540L oscilloscope, manufactured in the 1990s, I realized that its N-SGL (N times single trigger)
function is special and useful - -sometimes, waveforms, usually fault waveforms, take a long time to reappear. But this oscilloscope
looks old. I want to replace it with a new one. So I want to know which oscilloscopes also have this function? Thanks

This is called 'segmented memory mode' for most other DSO manufacturers.

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

I have the Siglent SDS2000X Plus series.

https://siglent.co.uk/products/digital-oscilloscopes/sds2000x-plus-series/

It does have this mode and I rather like the scope. Nice big screen, upgradeable.....

But I have a feeling that all scopes in this price bracket have this feature, maybe others will comment.

Regards

Useful info to me.

Nice oscilloscope. You're right, This price should have this mode. However, it seems that I need to look carefully to find it on the low-end oscilloscope.

Nice oscilloscope. You're right, This price should have this mode. However, it seems that I need to look carefully to find it on the low-end oscilloscope.
Example Siglent: All SPO (aka DPO) models have it, including also handheld models (only exceptions are very old design DSO models (SDS1000DL, CML series)
All models what have X after 3 or 4 digit model number have it and of course models where is A after model number. (also obsolete models SDS1000X, X+ and SDS2000)
These have also two kind of "segmented memory" acquisition (as is also in this Yokogava). Always background working history buffer mode (it save segments just with displayed wfm/s speed) and then fast sequence mode.
Also saved segments have full sampledata and can afterwards serial decode, do FFT and other math, use automatic measurements with full time resolution (not use decimated intermediate buffer for measurements)  including also gated measurements and cursor measurement functions etc. Also segments are always time stamped based to trig. Segments naturally contain all active channels simultaneously.

Siglent current models under SDS2000X Plus

SDS1202X-E  (2 channel, 200MHz, 1 ADC, 1GSa/s, 14M, up to 400k segment/s)  in Europe 339,- (VAT0)
SDS1104X-U  (4 channel, 100MHz (1ADC 14M, up to 400k segment/s, no options, some other features reduced from SDS1104X-E)) in Europe 359,- (VAT0)
SDS1104X-E  (4 channel, 100MHz. 2x 1GSa/s ADC, 2x14M, up to 400k segment/s)  in Europe 429,- (VAT0)
SDS1204X-E  (4 channel, 200MHz. 2x 1GSa/s ADC, 2x14M, up to 400k segment/s)  in Europe 659,- (VAT0)
SDS2202X-E  (2 channel, 200MHz, 1 ADC, 2GSa/s, 28M, up to 400k segment/s)
SDS2352X-E  (2 channel, 350MHz, 1 ADC, 2GSa/s, 28M, up to 400k segment/s)

Handhelds (totally very different if compare old obsolete models without X)
SSH800X models (2 channel, 100 or 200MHz, 1 ADC, 1GSa/s, 12M, up to 400k segment/s)
SSH1000X models (2 fully isolated channel, 100 or 200MHz, 1 ADC, 1GSa/s, 12M, up to 400k segment/s)

then come SDS2000X Plus, up to 500k segment/s and of course higher models up to 500 - 750k segment/s.

EV of course. Cars with smoke exhaust pipes - go to museum. In Finland quite all electric power is made using nuclear, wind, solar and water.

It depends on what you regard as low end. AFAIK most DSOs starting from US $400 have segmented memory. On some it might be an option you pay extra for. More money buys a nicer oscilloscope.

The R&S RTB2k and 3k/4k models have this too, at least if you have the history (segmented memory) option. They also always have history available - if you miss something but haven't triggered too many times since just hit stop and you can scroll back to the correct capture (total memory is larger than max single shot memory so there are always a few captures in there).

@vam,

We have a couple Siglent MSOs, the SDS2102X Plus and 2104X Plus, both "upgraded" with the kind help from those here on EEVblog. These are excellent value and full featured scopes. Really couldn't ask for more, maybe faster & higher resolution ADCs and wider bandwidth front end but you move into a much more expensive MSO.

The large screen, low noise front end, 50 ohm termination, nice FFT, Bode plot and UI using the mouse interface are a few things that showcase these MSOs. Siglent has created a masterpiece MSO at this price point IMO.

I've never noticed siglent's oscilloscope before. It looks good. Some of them are even the price of TEK TBS series. thanks

You have to be careful here, because while most modern DSOs except for the very bottom end will have both segments and sufficient memory, there are some legacy products even from A-brands that don't.  Short record length or memory is a dead giveaway that they won't have it.  The Tektronix TBS1000C and isolated TPS2000B series are examples--they have very little memory and don't support segments.  These scopes are based on very old designs.
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

However you get what you pay for though so caveat emptor. After a decade and spending several k euros I'm done buying Siglent equipment.

Somebody is working on a series of really in-depth videos to compare a recent Keysight, Rhode & Schwarz and Siglent scope. I think it is a good starting point to orientate yourself: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/functional-comparison-of-rs-rtb2000-siglent-sds2000x-and-keysight-dsox1000/

Also: why aren't looking at getting a new oscilloscope from Yokogawa? You are already used to the way these work. Unfortunately I have no hands-on experience with the recent Yokogawa models but I think the older models (although newer than the DL1540 you have) are quite nice where it comes to features and user interface. I used to own a DL1740 and currently also have a DL708 (8 channel).

Yes, I know this very well. I've used TDS220 produced in 1997, and then TDS1012 / TDS2002 / TDS1012B/TBS1152B, in essence, they are almost exactly the same.Their advantage is ease of use

In fact, the purpose of my oscilloscope is not complicated. Only used occasionally. Two years ago,I have a second-hand DL1740 too. Although it has rich configurations (LAN, USB host / slave, printer, VGA output, active probe interface) and its operation is similar to that of DL1540, the problem is that it seems to be more fragile than DL1540. The front-end chip is relatively hot when working, and it is difficult to find accessories after the front-end chip burns out.Despite the addition of heat sinks, I'm still worried about whether the machine is durable.Mainstream oscilloscope may be more suitable for me.

I'll see the video you recommend.thanks

I had to replace two of the front-end chips in my DL1740 as well; the mechanical design to keep the front-end chips cool is far from ideal. I still have an extra front-end chip somewhere but no longer own the DL1740. I bought the chips from Jotrin.

Someone may need your chips. There may be no new chips in the world, except jotrin
