HP 16702A drive replacement
« on: September 12, 2015, 04:03:51 pm »
Has anyone replaced the SCSI drive with a SCSI to SATA or Flash Adapter?

How would I backup the existing drive before replacing it?
Seems the Agilent page for ordering an install CD has been Long gone now...

What I've found is this Adapter:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/AztecMonster-II-SATA-SSD-SCSI-Converter-for-Mac-AKAI-Emu-Sampler-/301734688409?hash=item4640c9f699

I replaced the drive on mine, using a SCSI to IDE converter (an I-O DATA IDSC21-E found on ebay), an IDE to Compact Flash converter, and a CF card.  Used a Linux PC with a SCSI card to copy the software from the original drive (using dd).

Did you notice some speed improvements during boot and logic analyzer application?

Hmm..another question when reinstalling the software....do you really need a SCSI CD-ROM attached to it or can it boot via bootp and load from a NFS share?

Ordered now a SCSI CDROM drive....though couldn't pick up today due to German Union day or whatever it is called in english (o;

Is there something to obey when reinstalling from CDROM?
Like save license files or whatsoever?

I replaced the internal drive of my 16702B with a scsi2sd:

http://www.codesrc.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=SCSI2SD

I didn't time it, but does seem to boot faster and it is MUCH quieter.  Someone on one of the vintage test equipment Yahoo groups posted a license file that opens up all features on the 16000 series analyzers (non-commercial use).  If you can't find it, I can try to dig it up.  It still might be worth saving your license file (I didn't).

Did you just install the SCSI2SD drive with an empty SD card and booted from CDROM? Or did you "dd" over the content first?

Would be great if you could dig out the uncommercial license file....not sure what all can be enabled with the "demo" password with date set in the future and Switch back.

Looks I go for the SCSI2SD as well....haven't read from anyone being successful with the AztecMonster SCSI2SATA Adapter.

I had trouble connecting the original drive and the SD at the same time, so I just reinstalled off the CD onto a blank SD.  You can find the non-commercial license file in this thread:

Wow...excellent find :-)

Now for ordering the SCSI2SD board (o;

Do those license lines also enable all IA features for all processors?

I haven't used the IA stuff.  You can still download the original documentation here:

@Davorin

I think I have such an Adaptor which I do not need. Came out of a working Xerox machine.

Give me a PM if you are interested.

Okay....I've ordered a SCSI2SD adapter which arrived today....CD ROM is also ready and license file saved to floppy disk (o;

Currently with the hard drive when launching a remote "vp" session it takes:

Code: [Select]
14 seconds to show the Agilent welcome screen
72 seconds until the workspace is shown and hard drive stopped "rödeling"

Hmm..is there an english word for hard drive "rödeling" ? (o;

Now over to a fresh install ;-)

Went flawlessly the install....and from first impression the "vp" analyzer remote startup is around 2 to 3 times faster than before (o;

Not sure if I should also test the SCSI2SATA adapter....probably not much speed gain using a 500MBytes/sec drive on an old SCSI bus (o;

Does someone know how to prevent the analyzer to startup on the built-in screen and just the desktop?

When a machine is rapidly accessing the hard drive? I usually call it "thrashing".

EDIT - If you wanted a sound-a-like translation, "rattling" would also fit, which has the benefit of also being somewhat onomatopoeic.

What is the "vp" analyzer remote?

There is the remote X-Window session, remote web browser session, and remote VNC viewer session. I'm not sure what you mean by "vp".

Ah sorry...I use mocaXterm in Windows...telnet to the 16702A, set the "DISPLAY" environment and launch a remote X Window session by launching "vp" program on the console...

Oh, OK, now I see that "vp" is the name of the HP Logic Analyser Session Manager and the Logic Analyser application binary.

If you want to prevent "vp" from starting when the system boots and you would rather that the system just starts the standard HP-UX VUE user interface Dave Partridge wrote up a nice description of how to do that here:  http://www.perdrix.co.uk/hp16700/

I haven't tried following those instructions myself yet.

I've tried this for a while...but ended up having just an open xterm window (o;

Sure I will try again.....nothing could go wrong now as I have the installation CD and the "non-commercial" license file for major features....

Just checked if I have a fan to replace the noisy side fan in the 16702A.....is ut turns out...the fan at the side isn't the noise fact....the two small fans at the side of the switching power supply behind the LCD is the main factor.

1. graph noise with original fan
2. graph with side fan turned off

Here it is...the SCSI2SD adapter with 16GB microSD Card mounted on the hard drive bracket.
You just Need to plug the SCSI cable and it gets the +5V from the termination power (o;

When you buy the SCSI2SD adapter you just get the board, no cables, screws, Adapter, quick start sheet....nothing...just the bare board.

It would be nice if the board could be mounted with a male socket so it could be plugged in directly to the SCSI board.
