I'd like to see how fast their "uncompromising" waveform update rate works when in averaging acquisition mode. Also I wonder if one can actually get more than 16 bit of data out after average, as I think one can do in MXO scopes.

and the intensity grading, at 16 intensity levels, is worse than in the 3000x series which states 64 levels!

Yep, noticed that too.

There are actually quite a few areas where the 3000 X outperforms the HD3. Of course, in all of the major performance areas, the HD3 easily beats the 3000 X (as expected, and often by a wide margin), but some of the downgrades could matter in specific instances or to specific users.

Some other specs where the HD3 appears to be worse than the 3000 X:

  • Higher capacitance on 1 MΩ input
  • Smaller vertical input sensitivity range (in some instances)
  • Smaller vertical offset range (in some instances)
  • No roll or XY modes? Really? Coming soon
  • Lower maximum analog sample rate (in some instances)
  • Slower minimum trigger holdoff
  • Smaller external trigger voltage range
  • Missing trigger types: edge then edge, nth edge burst, analog video, HDTV video, USB, I²S, FlexRay, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429
  • Fewer intensity graduation levels Datasheet typo! Actually more graduation levels!
  • No FSK modulation on WaveGen Coming soon (see Dave's YouTube video)
  • No available video out port Correction: Has a DisplayPort connector (not mentioned in datasheet)

Shooting the first impression video now, and yes I will edit it.
Anyway, found my first problem, the waveform veritcal knob doesn't work properly when you have math turned on. As in I can't even get it to the bottom of the screen if I move it too quickly!
Also, it only has a 40MHz channel bandwidth selection, not 20MHz. Why?

Just confirmed with Keysight I can release stuff NOW if I want to.

Smaller vertical input sensitivity range (in some instances) 100uV is coming in a few weeks.
No roll or XY modes? Really? Coming in a few weeks, but not on my unit.
Smaller external trigger voltage range Coming soon as 1LSB

and "Other super-secret features TBA."

and even the 1000x! the 1000g series have FSK modulation on wavegen, and the 1000g wavegen also has higher amplitude on both 50 ohm and hi-Z, at a lower bandwidth, of course, but still!

The datasheet suggests there is no roll or XY mode. Really?

I personally haven't had a use for XY mode, but roll is very handy and something I use regularly. The lack of this would be a serious limitation (at least for me).

Roll mode and XY mode are coming very soon with a firmware update.

  • No available video out port

It has a Display Port connector

Yes, the Display Port connector is there, we're working on a couple 3rd party driver issues with said 3rd party, expecting that to be sorted out soon as well. The scope has an internal VNC server, so that's been our workaround for driving larger displays.

Good news; thanks!

Smaller vertical input sensitivity range (in some instances) 100uV is coming in a few weeks.
Smaller external trigger voltage range Coming soon as 1LSB

For these two, it's actually in the other direction:

  • The vertical input sensitivity on the 3000 X can be adjusted between 1 mV/div to 5 V/div (on both 50 Ω and 1 MΩ inputs). On the HD3, the maximum value (lowest sensitivity) is only 1 V/div on 50 Ω (but goes up to 10 V/div on 1 MΩ).
  • The external trigger on the 3000 X can accept ±8 V. On the HD3, it's limited to ±5 V.

surprisingly it does look really good for having only 16 levels! thank you. it does seem like it's a thing that can be changed with a firmware upgrade, but then i wonder why they shipped it with 16 levels and not the 64 of its predecessor? hmmm

I actually have a list of the next 5 firmware releases and what they are adding/improving in each version. So it's interesting to know that they must have released these internally, and then only after extensive testing does each version get released.

A bit of ambiguity in the datasheet :
It lists 3 memory options in "configuring your oscilloscope" on p.6  but these are not listed in the end under "After-Purchase License-Only Upgrades"
Does that mean memory upgrades are hardware - seems unlikely.

Under "After-Purchase License-Only Upgrades" it lists MSO, but also states MSO is standard elsewhere.

Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.

Well an unedited unboxing video would come for free, might as well do that first.

Waste of my life: what would I learn?

Quote
Or I could edit it into a more usable first impressions video, like 2nd channel worthy content maybe.

Might skim that.

But if you make a video explaining your considered opinions and the reason for them, I might learn something and so would watch it. (Even if I can't buy it because Keysight refuse sell it to people like me).

There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Why you want to buy directly from Keysight?  :-//
You can buy from a distributor (which can offer you support in case you need).

If it's tomorrow, "you get what you get and you don't get upset".

If it doesn't educate me (or entertain me) then I don't want it at any time. My (remaining) life is precious; I won't get it back!

I don't look to your videos for entertainment (duh!), so that leaves education in the form of reasoned opinions.

Quite frankly I really don't understand the rationale for "I opened the box and it looks like the brochure and didn't blow up when I plugged it in" videos, other than as an egoboo. (Yes, I realise you aren't fishing for egoboos :) )

Is that opinionated? Of course it is "not so humbly" opinionated!
