HP ESA-L1500A SA TG opinions
« on: June 13, 2020, 04:44:54 pm »
I've been considering something like this because it  goes to 1.5 GHz and covers  ham bands thru 33 and 23 cm. ( I have an Agilent E6380A which skips 23cm/1240 MHz.)  Use will be for sweep filters, check antennas and trouble shooting in the HF & VHF bands as well.  What are the pros and cons?  Also what are  other not quite boat anchors to consider and not spend $1000.00 that have a reliability track record?
I'd like to get the  Siglent SSA3032 and could stretch my budget but have a hard time justifying the expense.  Aside from its' features, specs, and size it has a 3 yr warranty and my credit card doubles manufacturers warranties.  So in the end this might make more sense if I wasn't trying to be thrifty.
One of my friends suggests considering a Rohde FSH3 instead of the Siglent???
I should mention that I've had 2 different  HP 141 & TG, an old Advantest can remember model but it wouldn't stay working, Anritsu MS2670A and now HP 8935. I'm nearly 79 so this will be my last SA if I can figure out which one meets my fancy.
Thanks
Hank

Please don't buy R&S FSH 3 or 6.

This device is the first portable that they released.

Problems:

1: Battery and circuit
2: Poor display
3: Small dynamic range
4: Noisy trace with TG
5: Phase noise

The FSH 4 is a lot better in that respect, but no world wonder either.

I had both devices (FSH 3.23 and 4.24) but will not buy them now.

My advice forget that very small stuff but buy a bit bigger (the keysight Fieldfox series is an exception to this).

I have an Agilent ESA E4411B now is nothing special but does not know above mentioned problems.

I have no experience with the Chinese Siglent (plastic segment) Spectrum/Network analyzers.

OK, thanks, I appreciate the help and candid comments.  The Rohde FSH3 is off my list and will also check out the Agilent ESA E4411B and look for 50 ohms.
Thanks

Hank
