Oscilloscopes with more than 4 channels
« on: December 22, 2017, 02:56:37 pm »
In a current project I am using all four channels, but life would be easier if i had more!

Actually in this project i'm not looking at the real waveforms, but at a part of the circuit converts all the higher voltage peaks into microcontroller-readable 5 volt pulses, which is want i want to look at..
At this point i may be good with a logic analyzer (which i have but not here with me) but i thought it would be interesting to know what equipment is available.

And who wouldn't love to have a test drive with a new scope  >:D

i only know of three currently in production:
- Picoscope 4824 has 8 channels at 80 MS/s. should be more than good enough for most of the times i'd rather have more than 4 chan
- Lecroy HDO8000A Series, but bloody expensive.
- Tek MDO5, same

what about the second hand market?

The cheapest answer is probably to  just use two scopes. Not so convenient, but you're always going to have single trigger source, which can be fed to both.

Look for Yokogawa. They have several 8 channel models.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Could a MSO with appropriately rated digital inputs meet your needs ?

What do you call HV ?  :-//

not actually looking for a new scope, as i've already solved the problem at hand.
I'm wondering about which scopes, old and new, come with more than 4 channels

how is yokogawa's software? never had the pleasure to play with one, besides lecroy rebadges

The firmware you mean? I used to own a DL1740. Their oscilloscopes work well and offer many features but the older models are -well- old so their screens have a low resolution and the processing power isn't that great for stuff like FFT.

The Tektronix 555 and 556 dual beam oscilloscopes could use a pair of 50 MHz 1A4 quad trace vertical plug-ins for 8 channels.  These oscilloscope could also display 4 channels plus the output of a spectrum analyser plug-in making them the first mixed domain oscilloscopes.  The Tektronix 5000 series mainframes could use a pair of 1 MHz 5A14N quad trace vertical plug-ins for 8 channels.  The Tektronix TLS216 "Logic Scope" is essentially a logic analyser with 16 x 8-bit 500 MHz 2 GS/s oscilloscope inputs.

When I needed a 4 channel DSO a couple years ago, I bought a pair of inexpensive Tektronix 2230s and stacked one on top of the other.
