Will you consider used equipment?

Hmm, even with those critera it's going to be hard to satisfy all of your desires.

I recommend used Agilent supplies, they can be had in this price range. However, few linear supplies are going to be able to satisfy both your current and voltage wants, at least at the top of the range.

Do you need 5A@30V? Or something more akin to 5A @ logic level voltages and 2-3A @ 30V?

Ian Johnson made a power supply, look really good. I dont know the specs but have a look and maybe possible to modify if possible.

As far as I know, most supplies that go as high as 30V usually only go up to about 3A and you need to get a lower voltage supply for higher current or a lower current supply for higher voltage. I'm not really an expert on this so you might be able to find one that suits your needs but I am not aware of any. You might need to get two supplies. My Power Designs TW5005W only goes to half an amp on each 50V channel but you can parallel them for an amp. If you got a dual channel 3 amp supply you could parallel both channels to get your 5 amps, but then you'd only have one channel available and I think that doubles the noise. If anyone wants to correct me on that go ahead.

That is why Ian's supply is so good. It uses a pre-regulator to low the supply in 2 stages. It then allow a switch-mode pre-regulator and a linear regulator for the main output stage.

You will be happy with the DP832. I have one and use it as my primary supply, even though I have several nice Agilent supplies as well.

I'm getting back into electronics (just for fun) and I'm currently building my lab. I'm looking for a variable bench power supply with the following minimum requirements:

1.) 0 - 30V
2.) 0 - 5A
3.) 2 channels
4.) Ripple below 1mv
5.) Max US $300
6.) 10 turn V pods, no coarse / fine pods
7.) Dedicated pod for current, no switch
8.) Screw down banana terminals
9.) Somewhat decent build quality, hence not the cheapest Chinese crap there is.

What brand and model do you guys suggest?

In your price range, you can buy a GW Instek GPS-2303

1.) 0 - 30V ; GPS-2303 = YES
2.) 0 - 5A ; GPS-2303 = 0 - 3A
3.) 2 channels ; GPS-2303 = YES
4.) Ripple below 1mv ; GPS-2303 = YES
5.) Max US $300 ; GPS-2303 = $330 (maybe less)
6.) 10 turn V pots, no coarse / fine pods ; GPS-2303 = Regular one turn pot
7.) Dedicated pot for current, no switch ; GPS-2303 = YES
8.) Screw down banana terminals ; GPS-2303 = YES
9.) Somewhat decent build quality, hence not the cheapest Chinese crap there is. ; GPS-2303 = Excellent built quality

On the GPS-2303 front panels, there are selector switches that make it possible to use the two channels in series (60V @ 3A) or in parallel (30V @ 6A).

Not as sophisticated as the as the Rigol DP832, but it is 2/3 the price when bought new. I bought a used one for less then $70 US + shipping.

Oh, you just ordered the Rigol DP832; I guess you readjusted your budget  :)

I think you should choose GW-Instek GPS-2303. It can match almost your requirements.

Oscilloscope will be next.. I'll have to do plenty of reading for this one tho.

That's the easiest. DS1054Z and you're done  ;D

Well I compromised on a couple things including the price and just ordered this:

Under $600-$700 there's only one choice: The DS1054Z.

Me? I'd buy one while I was figuring out whether or not you need more than that. It will always be a useful thing to have.

I saw the DS1054Z a couple days ago and read a couple reviews.

So be it, the DS1054Z will be ordered next month.

That was painless :)

Thanks!

PS: that Weller WAD101 Hot Ait station looks really good... but $500 ...?  :-DD

I recommend you order your DS1054Z from tequipment.net, they give a discount for eevblog members!

I have this one: http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/513812/Bench-PSU-adjustable-voltage-Basetech-BT-305-0-30-Vdc-0-5-A-150-W-No-of-outputs-1-x?ref=list

Sadly not 10 turns pot but 2 coarse fine.
But 0-30 / 0-5A

Fine but not entirely pro quality because of one small detail: spikes on output when you turn it on. up to 2-3 V
Caused by the Op amp supply...too small caps. Easy to fix though!

Probably... sadly was unable to go through them for the E4 or the 1272A

Thanks for the link to Ian Johnson's supply. This could actually be my first project. Too bad he still has some issues with the current version.

Is it a Switch Mode model ? I kind of avoid those because of the small amount of noise on the output in some cases

Quote from the manual (Overview, first sentence):
"DP800 series is high-performance programmable linear DC power supply."

Cheers

Nice :)  :-+

And a dual 0-30V supplay....like it. Cause...you allways need two or more different voltages - when you only got a single supply unit :P Murphy strikes everyday

I got 2 HP/Agilent 6653A's 0-30v/0-15A supplies that are in good condition for $200 and $300 each. They are awesome. Ugly...but awesome. They are still sold today for over $3k.

I was convinced that I should buy new PSU's, but some of the older ones are just fantastic pieces of gear. The 6653A is a bit overkill maybe for you, but there is a very long line of model numbers from HP. The have digital encoders, GPIB, remote sense, and other goodies.

I would not trade them for any other modern PSU with the same specs. After getting them GPIB connected, I don't have to mess with the dated control panel very much. eBay is a gold mine. The one I got for $200 was listed as not working. When I got it - The screw on the output terminal was loose. I turned the screw and it was good to go. I use them professionally every day - all day.
